Why Duke?

hahah i heard they arent doing that anymore? it was just a one year thing, fall 2004

yeah, i think i read it was a one time thing too, but you guys could always hope

Ipod...what a sweet deal. I'm asking for one for christmas. They're so conveniant compared to the old school, massive CD player.

I'm asking for one too

My mom was saying today "I'm not going to be able to find one" so I printed out 3 sites with availability. One even offers free shipping. It's just so easy, esp. if you're at Duke. Hop on the east/west bus, pull out the ipod...nicee.

hey ay u seemtobe the guru of duke ahha thanks for always spreading info even when ur already in and gl with premed btw how are the girls there. itllbe koolifi get accepted(not likely ahah) and i can meetppllike u

haha the "guru". no problem. the girls here are generally pretty atractive. i don't know how it comprares to other schools, but chances are you can find what you're looking for here (if you're looking at all). don't give up hope of getting accepted!

regarding AP credit for calc, i know a lot of people that can place out of calc but don't because 103 is not an easy class either and having the stronger background that comes with taking the college course will help you out in the long run, as duke25 said. I also heard that after 103 it gets easier. For me it makes sense to place out, however, because the med schools that require calculus accept AP credit and therefore I don't need to take math here at all (which would deal a blow to my GPA). just make sure you plan these things haha

and yeah the ipod was a one time thing... that's exactly the reason they announced it so late and the reason they're not going to do something similar each year. they don't want to make it look like a cheap gimmick to get people to want to go there.

whats the deal with premed, (im not really interested), it seems that they have very basic requirements to meet, why dont people talk about how if you go way over those requirements it helps... does it?

no it doesn't really help. "premed requirements" encompasses a couple different scenarios though. some schools require a statistics course, others require biochem, others require calculus. Some want just the basics.
Duke recommends that premeds take some cell bio for the sake of preparing for the MCAT.

But going crazy on science courses just for the sake of looking good to med schools doesn't work. they want to see that you do well in the courses that they require. If you love science and want to do it, go for it, but med schools won't go "wow! look how much bio he took! he must be qualified." That's why i'm planning to major in something that interests me, even though it isn't at all related to science

understood

this board is dead now!

haha it died about 8 posts ago

I'm applying for the ipod. I don't have 300 dollars, but I do have 70. I may not get in, but hey, when you really want something, I guess you gotta take your chances.

EDIT: Wait..that was a one year thing?? Shoot, already paid the 70 dollar application fee. Good thing I like the school too. Always have a fallback ;).

I'm pretty sure it's a 1 year thing...lol. It better be because I already have an Ipod.

let's just say that if you ask duke freshman if they've used their ipods for educational purposes, 99% will laugh hystericallty. i mean, if they just tout it as as reward for going to duke, fine. but they need to get over the educational aspect. although next semester we're going to be using it in my turkish class, and it'll be great having turkish recordings on my ipod....the truth is, their only real purpose is for listening to music.

oh, and another thing about duke...where else can you go to a good school and have it be 70 in january? i mean, i'm from san diego, and right now it's warmer there than it is here...

that never happens in the northeast. the truth is, our weather is never worse than a northeast late fall.

Ha, because it ROCKS (and three months later...)

i like this thread. so BUMP~

I got a letter from the admin office on my why duke essay

its probably what got me in

the website is also amazing, another reason why Duke is rad
