Why essay?

does princeton have a why princeton essay? if so, how many words? if not, what is the subject of the essay? again, how many words? and which ivies have why essays, if any? also, is it bad to use the same why essay for every college if they have similar departments, just tweaking it a little? thanks. sorry for all of the questions!

It does not, unless you are applying to the engineering school. You should check each colleges’ website for a downloadable application if you don’t already have a common app account.

If you are genuinely interested in a school, answering the why question is pretty easy. I suggest you customize each essay, if only a little because if you can submit the same essay to several different schools then perhaps you don’t really have an interest in a particular school but rather the subject, which is not what they are looking to gain from reading your essay.

thanks so much! so do any ivies have why essays, if you know? where r u applying?

Brown has a 1000 character “Why Brown” question, Yale has a 500 character “Why Yale” question, and Columbia has a 600 character “Why Columbia” question.

Two other top schools that have “Why” essays are Stanford and Northwestern, in case you’re interested.

U Penn has an essay about “how you’ll contribute,” but it’s like a “why” essay, too. :)

whenever they said “how will you contribute” or “what perspective will you bring,” my minds goes straight to diversity (in background, goals, thoughts, something you’re into). Rice has both a perspective and a why rice essay.

If we’re talking top schools, Chicago also has a why essay :)

USC also has one.

thanks, where are you all applying?
