I find this incredibly frustrating when people talk like this.
Do you know the percentage of women/blacks/Hispanics in the pipeline (that is, kids with CS major in college)?
Last year, for women, it is measly 13%. For blacks/Hispanics, the number is even lower.
Since Google is primarily a s/w company, it stands to reason that most of positions at Google will require a CS major.
So you are saying that a population with <10% possessing the required credential should all a sudden become 50% (or whatever number you wish to push) of the work force?
I know this is the Injustice De Jour which even folks like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton got involved.
I do not see push to increase Asian diversity among NFL and NBA - why is this the case?
So, instead, why don’t we talk about the reason we do not have women/blacks/Hispanics well represented in CS (or other engineering fields) in college? May be we will get somewhere if we address this issue.
My friend’s daughter, from a SF college, started a few weeks ago in marketing. She is loving it so far. Not every position in CS or engineering.

I agree - but I would assume the majority of the positions would be engineering since it is a s/w company after all.
I really do not see that they hire exclusively from “elite” colleges.
I know people there (finance, engineering) - a few UCSC and San Jose State graduates there.
I know 2 people hired there recently into top positions, one as a mechanical engineer on the top secret Google X team, and the other as a manager in the Human Resources side of things. Both went to “elite” schools for their disciplines.

@furrydog women stay away from CS degrees because in the work life balance in the computer industry there is no life. Also if you read the articles published recently in the NY Times and the LA Times there is severe discrimination against women that goes on in the industry. So yes maybe we should get Al Sharpton involved because he seems to be concerned about discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination has been overcome in the medical and legal professions. If it worked there it can work with a bunch of programmers
IMHO, many of these articles are “sensational” reporting.
I work in hi-tech area and I do not see these kinds of outrageous behaviors.
I do not doubt that these behaviors exist in few companies (and hopefully, they will go under soon).
Have you heard that some of them did not hire any interviewee who sports analog wristwatch or come too well dress (suit and tie) - too old-school and too uncool so they won’t fit in. I do not think think these kinds of behaviors are remotely the norm in the industry.
It is akin to say that Asians do not do well in NFL/NBA because it is such a hostile environment that in order to fit in you will need to sport tattoo, be homophobic, constantly dropping n******* bombs, and travel around in posse pretending to be gansta.
I don’t think they are sensational reporting. Most women do not want to work till 10 at nite with a family nor do they want to be passed up for promotion because of their sex.
