Why Hamilton's the Best

This forum is getting a little dull... and I like reading other people's posts, so here's my solution:

Post anything you love about Hamilton, cool facts about Hamilton, or what you're looking forward to. What do you think the school's strengths are? Basically this is a forum dedicated to getting the class of 2010 really excited to go there :) Current students-- feel free to post anything about Hamilton's weaknesses/faults, too, but let's avoid bitter hs students bashing the school, please :-D

Just got thinking about what i admire in Hamilton (i would be spending 4 years of my life there!!!) and i hit a brick wall. I mean, i do relish the thought of a college dedicated to honing my speaking and writing skills (which is one area i would love to be adept at) but what else???? Plus the fact that its in a place as secluded as Clinton,NY makes one think of being away from where the action is (even MT Holyoke is in a consortium of like 5 schools which must be well cool plus they are in the city!!).

Not forgetting the talk about rich, preppy college kids wearing aberchrombie & fitch about. Yeah, i kinda assume that it really cant be like that but there isn't any smoke without fire. There must be some sort of preppiness to make such rumors abound. This brings one to start questioning the sort of people he or she would be surrounded by in college. I mean you cant necessarily get along everyone but its kinda weird when there isnt much enthusiasm shown by those accepted to the school (people closely following the thread would get the gist).Loads of people just check thre forum but few say anything.

there are lots i could say about how unsure i am of the Hamilton environment (its now i wished i was near enuff to visit the campus) but i dont wanna sound discouraging.

I did apply Early desicion because i felt it was a well rounded school and dont regret that i would be going there for college. Just confused because, apart from the acceptance letter and financial documents, i havent even recieved a Bumper sticker to water my continued interest!!! :(

I see exactly where you're coming from with that. I feel the same way; obviously it's a great school with bright students, but what else is there? I'm not so worried, though. I visited twice in the past year or so, and seriously... it was the friendliest campus I went to. Of course, thats probably a huge generalization, but I've heard SO many times that Hamilton is just full of friendly students. I've actually heard multiple times that everyone waves to everyone else, even if they don't know eachother. I also found the administration to be a bit kinder at Hamilton than some others... no names. I'm not all that preppy myself, but I've come to see that IF what I hear about the friendly vibe of the campus is true, then I don't care if Abercrombie & Fitch is the main clothing supplier, I'll just deal with that. I just hope the kids are somewhat laid back.

I think that anyone who hasn't visited campus would have a hard time seeing what's so great about it. The campus is AMAZING. It has everything from the Root Glen to the new science center. The Commons have sushi that's actually good, and this new place... Cafe Green I think. From what I can tell, (current students feel free to correct me), Hamilton has above-average food and a very above-average campus. The dorms seem pretty nice, too. But I guess it's all sort of individual.

Let me give you a perspective from a parent. I not only used to spend a great deal I time at Hamilton visiting (my cousin and a couple uncles are alums) my daughter was accepted to the college last year. She applied to Hamilton because of all the wonderful experiences and amazing students I met many years ago. After visiting it became very apparent nothing has changed. The students were still some of the friendliest I or my daughter would encounter at any college, and the campus was even more beautiful than I remembered. Anyone (lakesidevibe) planning on attending Hamilton could not find a more welcoming college whether it be the students, professors or administrators. Will there be a few preps? You bet!! But they’re everywhere. If you want to run from Mr. and Ms. J Crew, Hampshire College comes to mind.
My daughter chose a different college to enroll but it was very difficult, as she had very fond memories of her visits to Hamilton. I have one more daughter who will be applying to colleges and hopefully she’ll choose Hamilton.

Not one of you will ever regret their decision to attended Hamilton. I promise! Good luck to you all.

If u get in

If u get in}}

Trying to make friends? :)

haha, i was accepted already. thanks so much for the insight, roadlesstraveled!

o when did u find out... did u get an early write?

I just got in today and now I have to decide where I want to go. It is true that I didn't really think anything of Hamilton until i visited the campus. The one thing that I'm kind of worried about is that it is such a small school in the middle of nowhere. Do students feel "stuck in a bubble?" Also, I go to a very "diverse" public high school, and I don't know what to think of the preppiness factor.

Rejected. Thank God. At least some deserving applicants out there can take my place.

UGH!! sorry about the reject but I am there with you!!!! It beats waiting though. At least we know!!

My son, now a totally happy freshman at Hamilton, is as non-preppy as you can get, not athletic, into music, film, creative writing, theater. He has lots of friends, a radio show, and is involved in many musical activities. The food is good and people really are friendly. We were sure this was the right place academically, but we all worried about what it would be like socially. Until about one hour into the first day of freshman orientation. It is really a wonderful school, full of lots of interesting students and professors. I drove my son back from spring break on Sunday. The campus was full of kids hugging each other so glad were they to see their friends after two weeks apart.

What are the stats for everyone that got accepted?

My son just got into Hamilton and is trying to decide if its the right place for him. We are coming up Sun, Apr 16 for admitted students day on the 17th. I tried to set up an overnite for that Sun nite. The admissions office didn't seem to friendly or helpful and said we could only arrange overnites for Tues in April unless I know someone he could stay with. Would your son or someone else he knows be willing to be a host? Any help would be appreciated.

Tobey- I am rushing a bit now, my son is too busy to host someon on Sunday night, but I'll ask him to ask friends. Another alternative is to stay in the Bristol Center on Campus and then hang around in the coffee house, diner, library, go to the campus movie (there is usually on on Sun night). I would probably have more luck finding someone to do one of those things with your son, but I will ask. If you send me a private message I'll reply tonight. In message also tell me a little about sons academic and EC interests and what questions he has at this point. Have you visited before?

Tobey, my son may have friend who would host your son Sun night. Do send me message. Back in touch tonight.
