What's your opinion on this? Do you think Harvard admission officers would like it? Or do you think they already assume that every student that wants to go to Harvard is because of the [insert usual reasons]

No one I know who goes there wrote a "Why Harvard?" essay. But this is purely anecdotal.

I would definitely not write one. Harvard knows that it is usually a candidate's top choice. They don't need reasons why. They are accepting candidates who will build a better community. Why Harvard? I'm pretty sure that an essay explaining "Why me?" (not directly; by showing a part of you) would be more effective. It seems like answering the question you suggested is not going to effectively communicate that.

Agreed. Choose something more interesting.

lol no one writes "why harvard?" essays, that's for the kiddie pool (yale anyone?)

Write something baller.

i'm not sure if you should write a whole seperate essay but definatly mention in your essay why you want to go to Harvard.

Michelle Hernandez (arthur/former addmissions person at dartmouth) said that admissions people always want to know why an applicant wants to go attend _____. so go ahead and tell them. also thell them why your good for that school.

However, don't have some beuty pageant answer actually tell them YOUR sole reason besides the fact that it's a highly ranked school. GOOD LUCK!

^iwish, that's true, but consider that the interview also serves that purpose. I was asked that direct question, and you can always answer it by appending your reasons to another statement fluidly or waiting until he asks whether you have anything else to add.

In brief, the interview seems like a better way to communicate that. The essay should, in my opinion, be used to reveal who YOU are, and why they should accept you.
