Why Haven’t I Been Admitted Yet?

I have similar stats as my friends, all of whom have been admitted. I have a 3.75 uw gpa 4.15 weighted. School doesn’t rank but probably within the top 10% of my class at a top public school, definitely top 25%. I have a 1550 SAT, 750 verbal and 800 math with an 800 Math 2 and 750 on bio E. Is it possible I’ve been rejected?

When did you apply? Did you get info to log into the tracker and is everything shown as in there? My kid thought his application was complete and then suddenly noticed it wasn’t later. Are you instate? What school/program did you apply to?

Someone here had a theory about SAT scores taking a little longer to process because the midwest tends to be more ACT oriented. There might be something to that. I am sure you will be accepted unless there is something weird in your application!

I logged into my application tracker and it says that all of my materials have been received. I can’t think of anything glaring in my application aside from the fact that I had one C during junior year, although this was because I missed an extensive amount of school towards the end of the year due to illness, which my counselor mentioned in her LOC. I applied out of state on October 29th as a math major.

We are in the same boat. It is all relative to school you applied to and the competition this year. Our app was turned in mid September and haven’t heard a thing despite being well within last years guidelines for admittance. Hang on as they continue to go back and review applications. Sometimes, they are just trying really hard to give you your first choice.

Did you apply to CLA or CSE as a math major? Either way you should be fine, just curious! It’s hard to imagine one well explained C would throw you off.

I am actually a BS math and comp sci major from CSE. Go Gophers!

Pick up the phone and call.
Are you in the ruining for their scholarships though (NMF, top 10% whatever it is this year)?
Full pay as OOS?

I totally agree you should just call and make sure all is well if it’s been more than like 3 weeks.

I applied to CSE as a math major lol

When I call the school, how should I go about phrasing the question?

“Someone here had a theory about SAT scores taking a little longer to process because the midwest tends to be more ACT oriented.”

  • That was me re: my son's lack of honors for CLA. But he was accepted right away despite submitting an SAT.

UMN is a college-specific admissions process with no discernable rhyme or reason to decision timing other than that the tippy-top stats for GPA/ACT/SAT tend to have a faster turnaround. Someone on another thread applied to CSE after the EA deadline as an RD and was just accepted! So the might be putting off anyone with a non-perfect academic record until later in the decision cycle. While a C during junior year under explanable circumstances might not prevent an acceptance to CSE, it will totally depend on the course and it could easily prevent an early rolling acceptance.

OP, your math scores are obviously fantastic. You might check the other CSE-accepted postings on CC or check with your friends to see if there’s a higher uw GPA on the application. I do wish UMN put more weight on the subject scores but those are secondary factors; GPA/class rank is actually a primary factor. Finally, keep in mind that it is still very early in the admissions process. CSE is a very selective program with an accept rate in the low-mid 20’s. Getting in a bit later in the cycle is OK.

I am also on the same page but longer- October 3rd.

Did you visit? If not, they might see you as someone applying there as a safety school. If that’s true then they might be trying to admit students with strong demonstrated interest first.

Additionally, I also applied with an SAT and heard back very quickly- I don’t that the test leads to a huge delay

They don’t select for demonstrated interest and UMN has traditionally been a respectable safety for years! LOL. They admit on strong stats as well as good fit with the college you have applied to (CSE, CBS, CLA, Carlson, CFANS, CEHD, CDes). Also, some colleges have different admission and honors notification schedules than others and, of course, some applicants might have a hook of some kind, including NM. This year they seem to be giving special consideration to OOS applicants for Class of '23, perhaps in part due to a significant drop in OOS enrollees this fall. So, a lot of factors on the table!

My son was also admitted quickly with an SAT. They have by now received two years of new SAT scores and are as aware of the revised SAT/ACT concordance as the rest of us are - so totally agree that an SAT shouldn’t be a hold up. And they won’t reject a 1550 w/o a pretty poor GPA associated with it. A few years ago they admitted someone with a 35 ACT and a 3.3 uw to CSE but it just took awhile for that admission to happen. OP is in a stronger place than that applicant was.

No change in the tracker but a letter is coming in the mail today. Plain-looking letter–is this a rejection letter?

3.5 GPA, 34 ACT, 780 Math II, 710 Physics, all 5s and 4s on APs.
Even if my son was rejected from CSE (which we expected) wouldn’t they at least admit him to CLA?

@threedoglimit I highly doubt you would get a rejection letter this soon. More than likely the letter is a generic letter. The acceptance letter is a 8 1/2 x 11 envelope that says CONGRATS on the outside.

Thanks, @UMNMom it’s definitely from the Admissions Office, but doesn’t look like marketing material, so I’m not sure what else it could be.

It might be a letter stating they’ve received your FAFSA. Check the return address on Informed Delivery to see if it’s from the financial aid office or the office of admissions.

All decisions will be posted on the tracker before you receive anything in the mail. That includes rejections as well as waitlist and acceptances. Would be very surprised if they started rejecting this early, especially if a good-fit second choice was specified on the application.

Guys… you need to all calm down. Just because you have not been sent anything yet, doesn’t mean you are outright rejected (this thread is making me laugh). All that means is that they have piles of other applications to get through and either yours has not been looked at or you are lower on their list of qualified applicants (this does not mean you will be rejected). If you are lower on the list of acceptance, that just means it takes longer for them to send you a decision since they have to compare you with others of similar stats. I just received my acceptance to CSE today (December 1st) with a 28 ACT and 3.95 GPA (use this if you want to compare your own stats with mine), and I submitted my app on October 29th. So give the people some time and stop complaining about how long its taking. I bet you did just fine.
