why history?

to those of you interested in majoring in History, what are your reasons?

thanks in advance for any input

I would assume that history majors find history to be interesting, important, and worth studying. Some people fall back on it as something they can tolerate doing for four years, but if you're wondering what the practical aspects of majoring in history are, realize that the bachelors' degree is not a professional degree. You can major in a subject and do so much more than teach that subject or go to graduate or professional school afterwards. History majors do a lot of reading, analyzing, and paper writing. They explore trends and situations. I think that they do a lot of reading, historical analysis, and researching, allof which are worthwhile. Although it shouldn't be an issue, here it seems that History majors buy the most books, which I did not initially expect. If you're unsure about history consider classics, art history, near eastern studies, or perhaps the study of a culture, such as America, Italy, Scandanavia . . . there's a lot. Then again, just History is also great- just know that there is a lot out there in the historical vein. Archaelogy, for instance.

thanks very much
