As a someone who grew up with access to NYC and a lover of the East Coast, I was very skeptical of a school that was in Ohio. I had never been in OH, let alone PA (disregarding the Philly Airport), and the idea of being away from the East Coast or even New England scared me a bit. I decided to give it a try after reading into what Wooster has to offer and going through the virtual tour (which I found myself watching often), though I was still hesitant as I had only seen negative things online. Whether it was a college student explaining why CoW “sucks” or even on this site through disappointing visits, I was reluctant falling in love. Well, I fell in love. Even on a rainy day in April, I was captivated with the environment of the school and did not want to leave. Months later, I dragged my parents through the ten hour drive so I could return to the one college that had not left my mind. There I was, yet again, meeting the kindest college students and faculty members I had come across (though maybe it is because I’m so used to "Northern hostility :p). I am admittedly in love with College of Wooster. I know not every person has the best experiences with every college (believe me, I know what it’s like having visited 20+ schools across the country), but I am posting this in hopes it reaches every student that feels unsure of considering CoW, as even I, a person often considered very picky, fell in love with the school I found had the most mixed reactions out of any on my list. Today I received my acceptance email in my portal through my EA application and received more money than I ever expected from any school.
Congratulations! Hoping for the best for you at CoW! My D19 is interested and we hope to visit soon.
Congratulations on your budding romance! Mine began a long time ago and continues to this day. Wooster is a special place that I’m not sure gets its justified recognition outside of academic circles. Haven’t seen stats recently, but for years more faculty of the conference (which includes Oberlin, Kenyon, Denison, and Earlham among others) sent their children to Wooster than to any of the other schools. The Independent Study (I.S.) program and the way the rest of the curriculum is built around it turn it into much more than just a “senior project”. As an undergrad you will complete what in many ways is equivalent to a Master’s thesis. You will leave the school with significant development in your abilities to think critically and independently, to examine what’s below the surface of things, and to attack new challenges with confidence. You will be well prepared to go out and make your mark in the world. So don’t apologize or feel self-conscious about loving Wooster. Be proud and happy that you found your place!
Someday, the sound of bagpipes will bring wistful tears to your eyes and you will own a blanket of tartan plaid wool. When that time comes, you’ll know what what I know…that you made a great choice. Go Scots!
