Why I think Jim Harbaugh will be the next Michigan coach...

From the Michigan Daily today

<a href=“Update: Harbaugh lands in Michigan, to be hired as next football coach”>http://michigandaily.com/sports/report-harbaugh-be-hired-michigans-coach

It’s as if they’ve figured out how to rehire Bo Schembechler. ;)

Ok, so it is safe to say that Harbaugh is going to be our next Football coach. I guess we knew better than all those so-called NFL analysts who said he would never leave the NFL, as though being a college coach is any less important or rewarding.

I assume he will be announced officially sometime tomorrow, at which point, the remaining pieces will fall into place. D.J. Durkin will likely be the DC, although I have heard rumors Mattison could be a co-DC, which would be cool. But who will Harbaugh bring as the OC? And what about position coaches? The only two coaches I would like to see come back are Mattison and Manning. Harbaugh will be the QB coach and Durkin will be the DL or LB coach, but who else? Maybe Tyrone Wheatley will be our RB coach. Who will be the WR coach? Most important of all, who will be our OL coach? I am so glad Funk is out. I think he was one of the main reasons our teams have stuck under Hoke. Traditionally, our OLs are dominant. Lately, they have been weak. As far as I am concerned, the OC and position coaches are going to make a big difference. Assuming Harbaugh brings in a high-energy group, he should turn this ship around in 2-3 seasons.

And what about recruits? I think it is far to say that the 6 verbals remaining will stay on. That is a solid core of players, especially when you consider than this class will be small (15 players).

Of the ones who decommitted, the only one I want back is Chris Clark because he did not commit anywhere else. Clark has already said that if Harbaugh is coach, he will seriously consider recommitting to Michigan.

At QB, we have Malzone, who seems to have a great attitude and the talent.

We are loaded at RB with guys like Green, Smith, Johnson and Isaac But adding another would be nice. I am not sure if any good RBs are currently considering Michigan. Damien Harris, one of the top 3 Rbs in the country who decommitted from Michigan last December has stated that he has absolutely no interest in Michigan, even if Harbaugh is coach. Too bad Mike Weber jumped ship.

We already have Brian Cole at WR, but one more would be nice to get another. Lodge DeMarkus and Equanimeous St. Brown are two of the top WRs in the nation, and both seem interested in Michigan.

We have two solid commits on OL (Newsome and Runyan), but getting one or two more would be nice. Isaiah Prince and Zach Robertson have both expressed interest in Michigan.

On the defensive side of the ball, we only have one commit in Safety Tyree Kinnel.

We definitely need 3-4 DLs. Some that come to mind are DTs Tim Settle and Terry Beckner and DEs Tyrone Wheatley, Rasheem Green and Jalen Dalton. We should be able to land a couple of those guys.

At LB, Osa Masina seems interested.

Finally, at DB, Iman Marshall, the #1 CB in the nation is intrigued by Harbaugh, but Alabama and Oregon are well positioned to get him. But if he joins, between Peppers and Marshall, teams are going to find it hard to pass. Safety Marcus Lewis is interested and Harbaugh could make the difference. Both Marshall and Lewis have openly admitted that if Harbaugh is coach, they would seriously consider Michigan.

I think we have a good shot at landing Chris Clark, Tyrone Wheatley, Iman Marshall and Marcus Lewis. The others are a shot in the dark.

I live in the SF Bay Area and don’t know whether to congratulate Michigan, or say, “Be careful what you wish for.” He’s a winner and it was amazing how fast he turned the Niners from perennial doormats into a power, but his act gets old fast, and he did a lot of things that infuriated 49er fans.

He’ll surely make Michigan football and the Big 10 more interesting.

I think it’ll be interesting to see how Harbaugh will implement his plan. Traditionally he’s had stingy and powerful run defenses (Stanford, 49ers)… however it goes, Urban Meyer vs. Jim Harbaugh is going to be a heck of a game next year.

A lot of us will miss the Jim Harbaugh / Pete Carroll feud.

Interesting article regarding to ties between Urban & Jim to share: http://www.13abc.com/story/27724405/jim-harbaugh-and-urban-meyers-hospital-ties-in-toledo

Besides the fact that they are both Ohioan, they are both 6’ 3" in height as well!!

In short, Cheers to the Wolverine Nation!!

Greg Roman to be Michigan OC from 49ers

Landing Jim Harbaugh is a big honkin’ deal. He’s got the Michigan DNA tracing to Schembechler, the competitive fire, the track record of success as player and as coach at every level, and the marquee name to match a marquee program. He was the top coach available at the professional or collegiate level, and Michigan beat out a number of NFL franchises, including the storied Chicago Bears, for his services, which speaks volumes both about Harbaugh’s loyalty to Michigan, and about the residual power of the Michigan football tradition despite these last years of mediocrity. He may need some time to right the ship, but maybe not so much time. There’s a nucleus of talent there already. Hoke ultimately failed as head coach, but he recruited well. He and his staff just never developed the talent they had, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Harbaugh has shown he can do that. He also has a reputation as a ferocious recruiter, and with his record as an NFL player and coach, he’ll have the ear of every top recruit in the country. Saban, Miles, Meyer, Kelly & co. can tell recruits how many players they’ve groomed for the NFL. Harbaugh can speak with first-person authority about what it takes as a player to succeed in the NFL, and what qualities and skill sets the top NFL coaches are looking for, and what he can do as their coach to help get them there. Instant credibility. Bright days ahead for Michigan football. Go Blue!

simba, the fans and the players were, for the most part, in favor of Harbaugh. The main issue seems to have been between Harbaugh and the GM.

simba9, what exactly did Harbaugh do to make 49ers fans mad?

Harbaugh himself never made me mad - it was mostly Roman’s terrible play-calling.

Which is why I am not sure I like the idea of Roman as our OC.

@Alexandre is that true? I haven’t found anything online about that yet

Three tweets today from John U Bacon - Harbaugh isn’t going to be paid the $8M base that some thought. You gotta love this guy!

“BREAKING NEWS: Straight from UM AD Jim Hackett. Harbaugh’s salary will be roughly $5M a year, plus incentives, same basic contract as 49ers.”

“Jim Harbaugh told Hackett he did NOT want to be the highest paid coach in CFB, or even the Big Ten. More concerned with pay for assistants”

“A bit more detail: Harbaugh contract is approximately $5 million for 7 years, with incentives. Clearly, Michigan would like him to stay.”



sophia, it is just a rumor for now. I am sure Harbaugh would not bring him to Michigan if he did not feel he is a capable OC.

I have to admit, when Schlissel first introduced Hackett as the interim AD, I was very skeptical. I thought we were about to make another mistake, similar to Brandon. Hackett was himself a CEO with no AD experience afterall. Well, I was proven wrong. As far as I am concerned, Hackett should be made our full time AD…if he wants the job of course. Well done to him.

Carroll > Hairball

I had no doubt he was moving onto Michigan. The Niners gave up on him a long time ago. I wish the Wolverines renewed success.

I am not sure I agree with you UCB. Their face-to-face meetings would suggest otherwise.

At Stanford, Harbaugh faced Carroll three times (2007, 2008 and 2009). In all three meetings, USC was ranked in the top 10 while Stanford was unranked and still rebuilding. In the first meeting, which was Harbaugh’s first season at Stanford (Harbaugh took over a Stanford team that had gone 1-11 in 2006), USC was ranked #2 in the nation and was expected to destroy Stanford in LA. Instead, Stanford shocked USC. In 2008, Carroll repaid Harbaugh the favor at Stanford. In 2009, Harbaugh led Stanford to his second win over Carroll at USC. So while at Stanford, its 2-1 in favor of Hairball, which is amazing considering that the two wins were at USC and that USC had a clear advantage talent-wise.

With the 49ers, Harbaugh played Carroll 8 times, and their final record was 4-4. It was 4-2 in favor of Harbaugh before the 2014 season and I do not think this season was an accurate reflection of Harbaugh’s coaching given the tension between Harbaugh and the 49ers organization.

Carroll is a great coach, but I think Harbaugh is on the same level.

I just said that because I like Carroll better. Nothing in the way of records, although Carroll does have a Super Bowl and FBS National Championships. At least Carroll smiles and looks like he’s having fun. Hairball never looks happy.
