I'm currently at a public school. Even though it is considered great for a public school and a lot of the kids that go to my school have the money/ECs to attend a private school, they don't have the smarts. Most of the teachers don't have any passion for teaching and their classes are quite boring.

The one class that I believe needs a good teacher (math) is the worst class for me this year. My teacher just can't teach math. I'm in an accelerated math group, but the teacher rarely teaches well and he rarely collects the homework. We spend entire classes sometimes just going over the homework that we did the previous night.

I detest the learning environment there and how most kids say that they hate reading and learning and all that. Just because I'm smart, I get bogged down with people asking me for answers constantly and it got to the point where helping them hindered my own schoolwork so I had to be a bit mean about it.

Although it wouldn't be the worst thing to go to my local public high school next year, it is definitely the last resort. I mentioned this quite a bit to my interviewers and they seemed to sympathize and they said that this is a very common story that they hear. I think it's sad how people don't take education seriously. I laugh at the kids at my school who say that they want to go to Harvard when they clearly have no idea what it takes.

Good luck and happiness to everyone that's applying this year to anywhere, whether it be a prep school, academic program, or college! :)
