Why, if you did, did you choose Fordham LC over NYU

On some NYU vs Fordham threads, I hear people saying they chose Fordham over NYU. My question is, is there anyone who would choose Fordham LC over NYU not due to being LSPd, financial, or religious reasons?

Yes. There are students at Fordham LC who chose it over NYU for a variety of reasons and there are students at LC who didn’t even apply to NYU bc they didn’t like it when they visited. There are also students who chose it over NYU for the reasons you listed and there are students who were rejected or waitlisted at NYU. There are a number of similarities between the schools just as there are a number of differences.

Last year, my S got into Tisch and was placed in their New Studio on Broadway for Musical Theatre. He chose Fordham LC over Tisch BEFORE he found out about the very nice scholarship Fordham gave him.

What were some of his reasons? The Theatre program first and foremost. Fordham is a BA, NYU is a BFA which meant he’d be spending almost all of his time in acting and acting related classes. He felt that the liberal arts requirements were watered down for Tisch students and there wouldn’t be enough time in his day to take the academic courses that he wanted. Fordham’s core curriculum excites him. He likes having to take classes in a variety of subjects and Fordham’s BA program will allow him to double major.

Second, the Jesuit education. Yes, my S is Catholic but you don’t have to be Catholic to admire the Jesuit philosophies of education and service.

Third, community. He felt that he could get to know students with diverse interests as opposed to only being around actors. He also felt that Fordham’s environment seemed to be more nurturing and caring among the faculty and students.

I’m sure there are other reasons but those are the top three. He couldn’t be happier with his choice.

BTW, NYU has done a fabulous job marketing itself as everybody’s dream school. Even your question pretty much asks why on earth would anybody choose Fordham LC over NYU. THAT is because of good marketing not necessarily because NYU is a better education.

Good luck! :)

My daughter thought she wanted to go to NYU, until she visited Fordham LC and fell in love with the place.

She wants to minor in theater, which is easy at Fordham, but not so easy at NYU. She also felt she wanted to be a big fish in a small pond, rather than a small fish in a huge pond. Fordham is so much smaller. She feels that there will be more chances for her to do what she wants to do, with less competition.

She also liked the Fordham campus much better. Everything a freshman at NYU needs is within 6 blocks, but 6 blocks can be far if you forget something and have to go back, or when it’s 15 degrees and snowing. She loves that Fordham is all enclosed. You can go out if you want, or you can stay in if you want. And that makes me feel better too. If she is studying at the library until late at night, there is no long walk home. Just hop on the elevator and you are at your room. I know NYU offers rides if you need them, but I feel she will be much safer at Fordham.
She didn’t even apply to NYU. Fordham became her first choice.
