I just transferred to CAS this year from UC Irvine. I was accepted to UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, and Boston U. - somehow I thought NYU was a good choice and I felt that I was really going somewhere. To my surprise, I was completely screwed by the university I had always dreamt of going to. On the first day of orientation, two counselors of mine (one being one of the heads of the department) told me I was nuts and that I ought to leave NYU immediately with my money and apply to defer my UCLA and Berkeley Admission before it was too late. Both went on to tell me that my credits, in the end, werent going to count toward the MAP requirements and that it would take 3 years of school at NYU to graduate (I am a Junior) at a cost of $120,000+. So I say, alright, I guess I am screwed, BUT I still want to give it a semester here. I then attempt to add classes that will count toward my major and what do you know, nothing, and I mean nothing opens up. Professors are spoken to, counselors spoken to, and other faculty - nobody can help me and tell me that I just have to deal with it for the first semester - deal with it for a cost of $19,000 - completely unacceptable.

I understand my situation is extreme and yes, I understood the cost involved with this university, but only as a cost to education ratio and that entailed taking classes of importance and graduating in 2 years like I was told I could by my tentative credit transfer sheet.

This is fair warning to all of you transfers. I have 1 exchange student and another fellow transfer who will be leaving after this semester. Be careful when you attend here and make sure by all means that you are guaranteed courses that will count toward you major (dont let counselors tell you to take metropolitan studies when it wont count for MAP or your major) and that your credits will transfer appropriately.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. :( I understand how hard it is for transfers to get into the classes that they want.

Sitty man...just sitty. Sorry to hear that you have to leave...hopefully it'll work out.

that sucks, but you really do need to do your homework about credits before you transfer to a school. and that goes for any school.

ya...i wouldn't blame this on NYU, they have easy to find information on which credits are and are not transferrable.

Hey man, sorry about your situation. Since I am from irvine as well, I was wondering how you feel about NYC? I know NYU screwed you over, but what is your overall impression of the city?

Thanks,

Its like many people say, NYC is for some and not for others. If you can get up on your own and go do something then youll be fine because there really is something for everyone out here. Its not as hard to make friends as everyone says it is: its very easy.

Oh, and for the credit transfer: Yea, it is NYU's fault. My tentative schedule for credit transfer says I have far more going over, but when I get to NYU its "Well, sorry, the best you can do is argue your point and we'll see how it goes." thats just a tad disengenuous if you ask me and this hasnt just happened to me.

If I were you, I wouldn't give up. Fight it. I'm sure with enough debating, you can get it your way. Talk to anyone who can do anything.

Good Luck,
2400what

Ya, I wish that was possible. I fought for the time I could, but if I lost I would lose big - $19,000 dollars big (for semester). It was something I couldnt gamble with.
