Why is 4 year graduation rate low for UCSD?

I calculated 4 year graduation rate based on data reported in Common Data Set.

UC - Enrolled - 4y grad - 4y %

UCLA - 4633 - 3424 - 74
CAL - 4355 - 3186 - 73
UCI - 4404 - 3141 - 71
UCSB - 4583 - 3116 - 68
UCSD - 3749 - 2186 - 58

58% seems too low when compared to other UCs.
Am I missing something?

The average time to graduate (UCSD) is 4.3 years, meaning that often students take one extra quarter. I think that’s the main reason. Comparing to UCI, I think this difference might be due to more required 1st-2nd year courses at UCSD, as compared to UCI.

I’d advise look instead at the 4 and 1/2 year graduation rates (instead of the 4 yr exactly grad. rates) for a fairer representation of grad. rates.

@HSSeniorBiol Thanks for confirming my suspicion on the course requirements being high. I wonder if it’s because of the UCSD’s college system. In any case one should be aware of the 4y grad rate before committing to UCSD.

Graduation requirements are pretty high at UCSD especially if you go into Revelle or ERC. I took 68 units last year.

68 / 3 quarters = 22.7 units per quarter. That is a lot, especially in a quarter system!

My daughter has friends graduating early at UCSD, and she expects to finish a quarter early there as well. AP credits seem to be a significant factor in this. Note that the different colleges have different GE’s. I believe Muir has the lowest or one of the lowest numbers of GE requirements.
