The AP Lang exam is extremely difficult and the curve is far from generous. How on earth do some of you guys get a 5 on the exam? The multiple choice is so subjective! Any tips, for all of us?

I’m taking it as well, but I don’t think it’s hard at all. It’s more of how well you can take MC english exams. You have to remember that if the answer is always stated in the passage, explicitly or implicitly. No matter what you think it is, if it’s in the passage, it’s correct. This way, if anyone ever appeals a question, the CB can easily point out where the answer is and explain why.

For a lot of the MC’s, go with your gut instinct. The essays are chosen to cause you to react a certain way to some statements, so if you think something is humorous even if it’s written in a very non-humorous way, then humorous is going to be the correct answer. The passage should make you feel strong expressions towards certain parts.

If you have trouble critically reading a passage, try taking practice tests (the more the better), or maybe SAT Lit tests. Critical reading is a skill that you have to develop and it really can’t be taught.

Best of luck in May. Hope we both get 5’s =]
