Why is Berkeley called Cal?

<p>Okay, I may sound like sound kind of troll, but why is it that Berkeley is called Cal? I mean, it's certainly not the only university in California.</p>

<p>(Yeah, it's kinda sad how that I don't really know anything about the university I'm going to....)</p>

<p>Even the mascot comparison says that we are indeed THE University of California.</p>
