from what everyone has said about the school and from what i’ve seen personally, i’m just wondering why us news does not put it any higher than #60… no this is not a knock on bu, in fact it may be a knock on the rankings, but i’m just a little surprised to not see bu higher on the list…

prolly because of peer evaluations mostly

Yup. Exactly that. A BU degree is not at all looked fabulously upon by employers and so forth.

BU's a good place to go to if you receive a great or full scholarship.

BU is, by far, the least prestegious/most academically worthless school in the boston area, and there are ALOT of schools with which to compare it to.

BU is just an awful school, the admissions standards are embarrasing. I heard of a white girl, from an affluent background, get accepted there this year with a frickin 1140 and 3.2 gpa.

BC is superior to BU in every aspect. No one WANTS to go to BU, they usually just "end" up there as a last resort.

She probably got into CGS...which is entirely different. They brin dumb rich people into that school to pay for the scholarships of everyone else. It's shameful, but true. And there's 17000 undergrads at BU...there's no way they all "ended up" there. Except for the fact that they accept fewer applicants, BC isn't better. It's a great school and it's gorgeous, but aside from that, the academics are below par...even people who go there admit it.

Erm... Henry seems to think the same thing about AU... "Let me tell you a little secret. AU is a crap school and the admissions standards are embarrasing."

How he knows all this is beyond me... hey, I don't even know why he's reading these forums.

BU has one of the highest Academic ratings in the Princeton Review guide to the colleges (a score of 90 - higher than NYU).

Seriously...why do you go into random forums and bash the schools and tell people they can't get in? You really don't know anything. If you're basing everything on prestige you're in for a big surprise. Once you get to college prestige doesn't mean anything because everyone there is in the SAME PLACE. Then it becomes really important to be in the place that can best suit your academic needs. It's not good enough for a school to just have your major, the school should have a REALLY good program for you.

Really dude...you should just shut up because you don't know anything.

As part of the BU community, I take this widespread attack on such a great institution as an insult. now i know BU may not be a Harvard or any of the top ivy league schools, but it does nonetheless hold its on weight on the academics as well as its real world professionalism. Each school within the university may have its own glitches and whatnot, but they also have quality reputations that parallel, and sometimes surpass other schools that are ranked higher. As someone said earlier, the BME program at BU is ranked really high up along with MIT and Johns Hopkins while the communications dept. isn't too shabby itself either, usually on par with Syracuse's communications dept. BU does more than accept a few underqualified students...it gives them and others who are qualified a chance to test their real world abilities in a surrounding condusive of that. No one is forced to go here and no one that goes here is forced to stay either. As part of this worldly community, I say that BU better prepares those who not only want to learn about philosophy and multi-variable calc, but also those who want to live and learn their future craft.

serial thanks for clearing that up - how would you critique BU's business program (COM)? I'm applying there and was wondering how rigorous the curriculum is as well as placement at top notch MBA schools and jobs.

well parikhs, BU's Business dept. is among the top 50 best college programs in the nation. They also have their rather recently built school (SMG). I'm not too sure about the way they run because I'm in the School of Communications, but from what my friends tell me, the course load is tough and challenging. As far as a place to prepare you for future endeavors in the business field, I think that i does that and much more. From what i've seen, SMG is a place of learning as well as a mini financial center, esp. in that sense that everyone that goes to SMG dresses like they work for a Fortune 500 company, lol, but thats only my opinion. Overall, the school is great and i'm not even in it. not sure if that answers any of your concerns, but it was my pleasure to at least try.

thanks - hows the social life? Where did you come from? City / State (rural, suburbs, urban)? How are the dorms? How are the people...easy to get along with, etc.?

Part of the ranking is due to BU's alumni giving rate, which is only about 13%...compared to 40%-50% or whatever at Harvard or Princeton. It's because of the schools they're being compared to, not because of the school itself.

Adeline..your right...alumni giving back and the amount of NIH grants have a big part on why the rankings are so low for BU...If you look at Harvard and Hopkins(Where I attend)....our rates for grants are high...bc they are big on research....Just a thought
