Why is Chem 3B considered so much harder than Chem 3A?

is the material just harder in general? or is it something else?

fyi i will be taking it with pedersen in the coming spring.

man i wanted to know the same thing.

mechrocket, what was considered a good score (as in in the A range) on this first midterm for 3A with pederson?

^ what if we never even tried to study while taking 3a? I’m takig 3b next spring.

@w4c: i’m taking 3b in a semester, not taking it right now

edit:

thanks LH, helpful response

lol details on roommate?

3B is easier than 3A. 3B exams are more like puzzles whereas 3A exams are more like bullsh1ts.

I’ve met a lot of people this semester telling me i should have taken it with vollhardt now i think about it they’re right. They say vollhardt has a curve. and his tests really differentiates the contenders and pretenders, unlike pedersen, where the avg is really high, you have to do well get the A.

i think the only reason why i did alright in 3a was frechet. there was massive curve.

what are the averages on Pedersen midterms/finals? i sort of assumed they were really low…

yeah, Frechet’s curve was awesome lol

frechet’s curves were the reason i passed. they were so big.
yes! double entendre for the win.

thanks LH :)…if you dont mind, what was the mean and SD when you took it for each of the two midterms if you remember them

i doubt LH remembers exactly what they are

hey W4C, can you tell us the mean when you get your first MT back? i’m curious

edit: wait, oops, nevermind lol

you mean for 3A right? yeah mean was 110/150. i got a 120…im trying to figure out what this translates to in terms of my grade since every body did so great on the midterm…

Waiting4College, the standard deviation was 29, so you scored roughly 1/3 of the standard deviation above average. Assuming the average is set at a B-, and that one standard deviation above the average is the cutoff for some kind of A, then you’re probably around the B range. But you shouldn’t put too much store into this particular midterm as it’s not really indicative of what organic chemistry is all about (and hence isn’t a very good measuring tool for how “well” you’re doing); it was very formulaic, but there was a lot to know which is why the distribution had such a huge disparity (i.e. people who studied scored relatively high, people who didn’t bombed it). The next midterm’s mean will be much lower, as Pedersen said, and I except the standard deviation to be normalized as well.

ok thanks! man i really did study off my ass for this one and i can’t even with all that only a B. maybe i should try taking the next one without studying-i could probably pull of an equal if not higher grade.

well a normalized sd is always good

what are some tips to get an A in 3b?

The key to doing well in ochem: do lots of practice problems.
