Why is Dartmouth skipped

Just wondering, I have seen a ton of people on the chances board with a list like this:

Duke
Princeton
Brown
Northwestern
Amherst
Williams
etc.

Clearly Dartmouth falls right alongside these places and many of us know its one of the most unique and positive experiences in the country. Yet some people seem to skip it on their college trips or don't consider it, yet they consider very similar schools. Its not a big issue and I am sure it happens to all schools, I am just baffled how this happens.

Any thoughts?

Well I would say Dartmouth isn't for everyone. I mean, not every list on here excludes Dartmouth, far from it...

Its clearly not for everyone, but for someone with a list like that I dont see how it could be excluded.

It does not take anything away from Dartmouth or any other school because it may not appear on everyone's list. You of all people should know that Dartmouth students are a pretty self selected bunch who chose it because they really want to be there.

Life is not about a popularity contest,or going along with every one else unless one truly has a sheep mentality and needs to be led. It really is a good thing and do something because it is the best for you. In the end youare attending college for you, not because your school is on everyone's top 10 list.

I don't think that's what he was saying. I think I know what you mean. There are ivys on there, so obviously the person wouldn't be opposed to ivys, duke's on there which has a social life similar to dartmouth's (involving a greek system), and small rural schools like williams and amherst or on there, so it doesn't make too much sense.

I have no problem with Dartmouth not making some[generic]body's laundry/wish list of schools; in fact, I prefer it. Dartmouth is unique and I think a lot of the people who will want to go there (like me) know very early in the process that Dartmouth is their school (I certainly did).

There are those who find out somewhat later in the process (Dimensions, perhaps), I believe they will then know quite quickly whether or not Dartmouth is for them and will not be in a quandary over whether they should go to Dartmouth...Penn...Yale and they will not be asking stangers on the internet where to go; they will know it is Dartmouth.

You either feel Green or you don't.

I can see both of these on the same list, however I can also understand that all other Ivys would be off the list or on a list excluding these two. Both schools are physically more removed as in remote locations.

It's 'cause Dartmouth isn't a good school.

Ha, syke.

slipper...the real reason is that Dartmouth believe it or not is the least known ivy league school. If your someone who is not born with a US News magazine and you live in like California, Texas, Florida, Wisconsin, this is just not a school that is mentioned a lot. Believe it or not, you claim that Dartmouth is up there with Columbia in terms of the wow factor. It isn't and neither is Brown and many other veryyyyy fine schools. It is a fabulous school and has a stellar rep among grad school ppl but not among the "general" public. If you are educated, you think of Dartmouth as a wonderfulllllll school and I do as well. I didn't apply to Dart b/c if i was going to a school in a rural location, I wanted to go to a research school not a LAC. I felt comfortable w. more students...hence..cornell made more sense for me.

I actually think Brown might have a decent name recognition solely because of Lisa Simpson and her "oh no i'll have to go to Brown" line. And I think Dartmouth has better name recognition than Cornell and definitely Penn. People here think Penn is a state school, or think that there is only Penn State. And I think, at least in the Midwest, Stanford has a big athletic reputation but no one realizes it is like a top 5 school academically. Of course here (at my craptacular school) if you asked about top five schools, you would probably be told: Harvard, WUSTL, UIUC, Purdue, and Iowa State.

Out here in California Dartmouth is not well known among the general population. I didn't even know that Dartmouth and Brown were Ivy League schools until I started reading threads here.

True, Bjwbell, when I tell people Im going to Dartmouth dont even know its apart of the ivy league, all they know is that its not in California. Initially when I began to put my list together I totally overlooked Dartmouth even though I was really interested in Amherst, Williams, Duke, and Northwestern, I dont know why, but Dartmouth just didnt enter my mind last summer until someone suggested it for me, it was prolly because it was one of ivies I knew least about.

Shhhhhh, it's great that they don't know!!! Are people really that sheltered in California? Unfortunately, all the Californians at my school are well aware of Dartmouth!!!!

oh yeah, I'd say Penn is way less known than Dartmouth. Until age 14, I thought there were 7 Ivys, and when someone tried to convince me that the University of Pennsylvania was one, I thought they were insane.

i always thought of UPenn has tha reallly cool school in Phili. For some reason, when I see UPenn, i think of lush green. I have no idea why...but it has always like struck me as the place I would want to go to school

Yeah, I'm from Wisconsin, and I can echo Drummerdude's thoughts: Dartmouth, among quite a few people around here, is actually at least recognized as a great school, although I think most people don't quite know the extent. Penn is the one everyone thinks is 'Penn State'. And at Penn Preview Days, I was one of the only students from the Midwest visiting. I don't know why, it's just not a school very many Midwestern kids go to. I guess each school might have a pockets of the country where it isn't very well known, and you might have happened to run into a few of those.

Penn really got a raw deal in the name category. If only it had been called Franklin or something.

And collegekid: what is up with all of the subtle bashing/trolling? You've been adding negativity all over the forums lately. Not sure if it's because you have buyers remorse / inferiority complex in regards to Cornell, but give it a rest.

You guys should be lucky Dartmouth is SOMETIMES skipped. Let the losers who don't know about it be in awe that you are receiving one of the best college experiences around. :)

Peace.

i am not trolling wat-so-ever. I was just answering the poster's question. You want me to lie and tell you that in California that Dartmouth is a common name. It isn't. In fact, UCLA and Berk and Stanford are far more prestigious among the general ppl. Hence, when you see what are my chances posts, a lot of ppl tend to skip over it b/c they do not know much about it. I, however, respect it a whole lot and think of it as a fabulous school.

I dont know I have been in Cali at UCLA this summer and have gotten nothing but "you went to Dartmouth, you must be smart", and this is coming from UCLA kids.
