reading all these posts about how someone got an A- instead of an A and how they are wicked depressed about it, depresses me
i take all honors at a wicked competitive school and i get like one B, B+s and A-'s
I still am given support my teachers and peers that i will be able to go to a good college (some i am looking at a lot right now is tufts and even columbia)
but reading all these posts makes me feel like ill never get in anyone half as good as there
does anyone else feel this way or have some words of wisdom for me?
and don't tell me to try and get all A's because its not like im purposley getting these grades. im trying my hardest
ok haha that was like a depressing post but let me know what you all think

we're not we just work hard..smart is something different really.
it irritates me when ppl mix up smart and hard working
(not saying you do just some ppl who are like OMG you got an AAA in that class?? you 're so SMART!! shouts hysterically)

I COMPLETELY agree. I am the class valedictorian, and I crave so much to just tell people that it's mostly hard work. It really is. Especially at my school, the teachers just make the class difficult by giving you meaningless assignments. I have six AP's, and in only three of them do I really feel like I'm learning and working really hard at the same time. The other AP classes I have aren't EASY, but I don't feel like getting an A in there really proves much of anything besides the fact I worked my ass off for a teacher who doesn't really teach. :(

There IS a difference in being intelligent and being a hard working. I know some people who are smart in a sense, but are pretty lazy and have low standards for themselves in terms of grades. I know some people who make high grades, but really don't seem that smart or stimulating intellectually.

I try to maintain a balance. I think that's what's most important, and I think that's what colleges like to look at too. At least from what I've seen on this website, it isn't IMPOSSIBLE to get all A's. I've yet to get a B in a class in high school (God it would suck to get it this year XD), and yes, it has been pain, but I did it.

Everyone here is a high achiever because they want to go to a good college, AND they are hard workers. People here get upset over an A- or a B because they know they can do better. Of course, I think some people exaggerate--for example, someone may get a 34 on the ACT, and feel like they need to get a higher score to get into a college. Logically getting a 34 instead of a 35 or 36 won't be the single deciding factor in whether or not you get into a school.

So we just like to work hard. We worry when things don't come out the way we want them too. I think it's a good trait to have, but sometimes not..

/rant

Funny how people think that way. It really is irritating to, say, get an A on a test that a lot of people bombed due to sheer laziness and hear "oh, [name] only got an A because he's naturally smart." Probably the worst thing for me to hear is: "I could get straight A's if I wanted to." My response is: "Yeah, and I could become supreme dictator of the world if I wanted to."

Jamesford, you made me laugh. Highfive.

1 word. Endurance.

i think the reason that posters on CC are so much smarter/hardworking than the average American high school student in general is because lazy people who dont care about grades or college probably dont spend their time posting on a college message board.

does that answer your actual question a little better, narcissa?

Everyone here is so "smart" because they care about their education and choose to interact with others that also do or might be able to share some insight or common happenings (this thread for example). You wouldn't expect a bunch of "non-smart" people that don't care about their education whatsoever to come to a site called College Confidential.

And I agree with the other posts above about how intelligence does not equal a hard worker. It is smart to work hard, though A's do not equal intelligence. I've gone through this so many times at school, it's ridiculous!

This site can be a bit emotionally damaging if you're not already that confident about yourself (mostly academically). Take everything you see here lightly, as this site really only reflects a small, small portion of the applicant pool. And we can't forget that people lie--a lot! You can use this site to your advantage at times; scope out the competition, see if you can get a one-up, or even find out about new opportunities.

I hate the 'Chances' threads, and my advice for you is to steer clear of them. They're not really useful, as you're only being evaluated by people that don't matter in you're admissions decisions, and they usually throw everyone else WAY off. Really, if that's whats getting you, ignore them. Sometimes this site makes me feel a little depressed because I'm not perfect as so many CC members seem, but it's really not an accurate view of the pool. I have learned to somewhat adjust to the skewed views that are so often seen here. Contrary to popular belief, a B is not an auto-reject!

Higher standards.

Yeah inspiration really nailed it. The average person who doesn't really stress much about school and such probably wouldn't be going on College confidential during his/her free time.

"Everyone here is so 'smart' because they care about their education and choose to interact with others that also do or might be able to share some insight or common happenings"

I like that.

I'm in college, but I post on here sometimes. I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of responses when I opened this thread. I really liked the answers I read. The students here work really, really hard. I too hate when people confuse "smarts" with plain old hard work. Keep up the good work, guys. :)

Duper, is it weird that your comment remind me of Meijers

And I agree, most of it is hard work.

well it is annoying, but if that person has something else that he spends his intelligence on instead of grades, i think that's perfectly fine. as long as he's not being a lazy asz and just wasting all his time playing video games or something. lol and no i really don't think you can be dictator of the world if you wanted to.wouldn't somebody already have done that then >_<

Or better, read the "Actual Results" thread stickied to the top of the page. It'll give you a better perspective on the actual accuracy of chance threads.

Nobody can become supreme dictator without my approval.

lol seein some of the CC'ers here getting rejected from top schools, i'm just like, "nah there's no hope for me if :insert name here: got rejected w/ECs, grades, and SATs this good"...

kinda depressing

Just because people SAY they have great stats doesn't mean it is true. Like many things on the Internet, you can't always believe what you read.
I am not accusing any one in particular of lying, but trolls do exist in many forums everywhere

...there doesn't seem to be a point in lying on an online forum where nobody knows anyone else

but i guess ppl do like to hear "wow, you'll get into harvard no problem!!!111oneone" or "wow your stats are awesome"

I don't usually doubt that people have excellent stats, it's the posts with "OMG my grades suck i kno will it keep me out of blablabla??" that annoy me, and in the end they usually have like. One A- as a "blemish" on their records.
