Why is everyone majoring in biology?

Is it just me, or is almost everyone majoring in biology? about 80% of the friends I ask say they're doing something biology related. Few are premeds!
I mean, is biology the new electrical engineering major?

Biotech is the way of the future, and biology is where a lot of the big and fascinating research is being done nowadays. The increased concern for the environment probably helps too. Bio is a fascinating subject, and I’d be interested in seeing how people’s interest in biology breaks down.

Alas, I can be an exception to the rule. Let’s hear it for history and philosophy!

All the people I know who major in biology say that it’s easy to learn and excel in.

Well… as a humanities/anthropology major, I know relatively few bio majors. However, of the ones I do know, very few are bio majors because they legitimately like it. Some are bio majors because it’ll make their parents happy, some are in there because they think it’ll land them a job, etc.

I plan on majoring in cell biology because I legitimately like it. C-:

I don’t understand it either! I’ve never really like biology (too much rote memorization and less doing which is why I like chemistry more :D) so I have my own bias against it but a lot of people seem to like it.

However I do have a huge interest in stem cell research so hey, maybe biology could be in my future :)

Biology is so boring? IDK maybe it was just my teacher.

I’m majoring in either Biology or the Biological Basis of Behavior. Biology really is a versatile degree. It makes getting in all the class requirements for dental/med/pharm school very easy. Plus, if you combine it with an econ degree, healthcare management is feasible. Remember the field of biology doubles every year…so its definately an expanding field.

People want to be science majors but don’t want to do anything hard

truth

Meh ok fine…I also like biology because I dont have to think as much as I would if I majored in chemistry.

I’m not surprised to see that bio trends a little towards the medical / technology side. I suspect that something like evolutionary biology might be as popular as some liberal arts majors.

FYI I’m doing bioengineering/biomedical engineering :)

 That’s harsh lol. And I was told my major was one of the hardest!

^ lol go see what people in physics are doing

The number of people taking biology in high school in my country is increasing and the number of people taking physics is decreasing.

^^ And then go and see what the people in mathematics are doing and you might ***** out your heart

I know a surprising number of people who want to discover ways to increase the longevity of their lives and are going into bio as a result. I don`t really understand that motivation, but w/e

^Nice “don’t”.

a lot of ppl i know say they want to major in psychology…we’re going to have a lot of psychologists

Bio is easy, its just memorization.
