Why is everyone so smart on this thing

i second philosophe, its like we need to be scared. i was reading a thread started by a student who said he was taking 3 ap classes 2 honors classes and one regular class and he was pretty much told by other users to not even bother applying to college! Ridicules! and just smile, i have never in my life heard of a freshmen taking algebra 2. maybe its common where you come from but it has never happened in my district as far as i’m concerned. in fact, only 5-10% of freshmen in my district are allowed to skip a year of math and take sophomore geometry while the remaining 90% take regular freshmen algebra. of course, i have never met a freshmen on CC that was actually taking regular freshmen algebra. that would be like…the end of the universe! but yeah as i said, most CCers are top students. Don’t expect to find many average students here on CC. average is not acceptable here…

^ urban dictionary has a pretty accurate description of us

oh haha, I’ve read that description. so funny :P

It’s not unusual to take Algebra II as a freshman. This is the top track in our district:

7th: Algebra I
8th: Geometry
9th: Honors Algebra II
10th: Honors Trigonometry/Honors Analytic Geometry
11th; AP Calc AB
12th: AP Calc BC

This is not as advanced as some districts where Multivariable Calc is offered after Calc BC.

Check out this thread, especially the more recent posts.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/320343-poll-what-math-sequence-were-you-school.html?highlight=math+sequence

You must understand that while it may not seem unusual for you, it is definitely unusual for the vast majority of students. There was only one person in my class of about 600 students that actually made it as far as algebra II as a freshman.

Yeah it really is all about perspective and relativity (Are those even the right words? Whatever, lol). I attended a school in which the majority of kids stopped taking math after their third unit of (either geometry or algebra II) because that’s all they needed to graduate. I transferred to a school where at least half of the freshman class was in geometry, and a couple were even in algebra II (the rest were in algebra I, which is perfectly fine)! Different schools have different standards/opportunities, so it’s hard to compare one student to another without having the entire story.

^^Really? What did they take instead? About 10% of my graduating class started with Alegra 2, and two of us started with PreCalc.

I have to agree with EmHann

@curiousCC “This is the top track in OUR district”

Emphasis on the word OUR.

To you it may seem common, but the AVERAGE high school student does not take Algebra II as a freshman.

The link to that thread does nothing but support the fact that CC kids are NOT average.

You really, really, REALLY have to keep in mind that the people who go on this site are the people who care most about going to a good college, so these people are more likely to already have high grades and be overachievers.

The worst about this site is that people constantly write things like “WOW I bombed the CR section on the SAT, I got a 680 :(”

Just so you know, any SAT score above 2000 is extremely good. On this site? It is generally considered a significantly low score… but out there in the real world, when you tell your friends you scored above 2000, they’ll all congratulate you and ask you how you did it.

I got a 2040 on my first SAT, and to most people here, that’s OK for the first time. At my school, people kept asking how I did it and everyone loves to borrow study material (like vocab words) off of me…

Bottom line: never compare yourself to the people here. Realize that the people here are automatically more likely to be “smarter”. Always keep your head up.

Maybe it’s just school districts but the “top track” math courses you can take are like this in my school:
Freshman: Geometry
Sophomore: Algebra 2 & Pre-Calculus
Junior: AP Calculus AB/AP Statistics
Senior: Other AP class you didn’t take.

Its because the smart ones need the reassurance. Everyone likes being reassured just not many think that something like this would be on the internet.

@Jimbo- what does who take? The kids at my old school? Most just have free blocks and electives in place of math. A very lackadaisical school…only about 50% of each graduating class go to a 2 or 4 year college. Of course, there are those who take advantage of the math classes offered and go up to AP Calc, but that’s only a small handful each year.

I don’t think anyone’s really factored in the 1% rule of the internet here either. for example, the trend in the chances forum fits the rule: for every 100 views, there is one reply, unless the OP is annoyingly persistent about bumping his thread/offers incentives such as chance-backs.
there are many people who visit CC, a fraction who make accounts, a fraction of those who actively post, and of the whole, a tiny amount of people who generate all of the content.
