Why is Georgetown's spring break so early?

Yay, in a little more than 48 hours I get to see my daughter, home from Georgetown.

Most of her friends won't be home for break for at least another week (of course this means more time for just the two of us together!). When people ask why her break is so early, I explain it in terms of the mini-break around Easter, that this is why the regular break is scheduled for so early in March.

As Easter is a movable holiday and can vary by as much as a month, will the spring break also be all over the calendar? Maybe some parents of older Georgetown students can help me figure this out.

Thanks, and I hope your child is home with you soon, or at least that they have a warm, happy, safe and fun break!

With one exception, the spring break for the last 7 or 8 years (and probably longer) has been the same week as the Big East basketball tournament. That’s how I always remembered it, anyway.

For 2012-13:

» Mar 1, All day: Spring Break Begins after Last Class
» Mar 11, All day: Classes Resume

For 2013-14:

» Mar 7, All day: Spring Break Begins after Last Class
» Mar 17, All day: Classes Resume

Yep, I always tell people Georgetown gets time off in the Spring for its two major religions. Basketball and Catholicism.
