Why is Indiana underrated?

I mean. IUB is a great place to study anything. And it has one of the best business programs in the world!

I don't get why it's ranked far lower than Ohio State. It's like ranked 72th by US NEWS.

Can anyone explain?

Far lower?

I think Ohio State is tied for 64th through 69th or something with a point total of something like 66, while Indiana comes in 73rd with a point total of like 64.

A two point difference in the USNW ranking is nothing–however, because so many schools get bunched together based upon how the rankings are done, a single point can often drop a school by 9 to 11 spots in the rankings.

Also, lots of times, the USNW rankings are based on stupid things–like how much the alumni contributes to the school. They do this simply so that the Ivies and other “elite” privates will stay at the top of the rankings. (Privates also have greater alumni giving rates, percentage-wise, than public schools do. This is mainly because everyone knows that the public is already giving to the public schools through paying their taxes.)

I don’t think a single public school has been in the top 20 of the rankings in over 25 years. Yet, let’s take UC Berkeley, which ranked 21st in the USNW rankings last year. This school had 47 of its 48 graduate programs ranked in the top 10 best programs in the country. It has more nobel prize winners than any school in the country, more national science foundation members, more MacArthur Fellows, more pulitzer prize winners–and USNW ranks it as the best engineering schools in 4 categories and best humanities school in the country, yet it ranks about 14 spots lower than MIT in the overall rankings, and 20 spots lower than Princeton. This is ridiculous. The only categories where UC Berkeley ranks lower than the other two schools are in overall graduation rate and in alumni giving.

For this reason, I should say that I wouldn’t rely really heavy on the overall USNW rankings–but rather, I would put more emphasis on the separate rankings of each major program–where they don’t play as many “games” to get the results that will sell the magazine to their target audience.

This is also why Indiana is lower ranked than it should be. It has great business, music, foreign language, public administration and nursing programs. But it has no engineering school, so it gets ranked down. Also, it’s SAT scores are a little lower than some other schools, so it gets ranked down–even though each program I’ve mentioned is like in the top 15 nationally. (And, of course, their alumni giving rate is kind of low relative to some other schools.)

P.S. I have neither taken nor taught a class at UC Berkeley, so I’m not prejudiced in their favor for those reasons. And I think everyone knows that my son goes to Indiana, so yes, I am prejudiced for that reason–but then that’s one of the reasons my son goes there–because the business program and the school provide a great education–and a great academic experience (Princeton Review ranked Indiana University #1 overall in that category).

Thank you! I mean, if your son goes to the university you probably know very well about the school. I really appreciate you.

After graduating Kelley, I plan to go back to South Korea to get a job. Hopefully I can work at a bank or for the goverment(trade and commerce department).

I think I asked you this, but do you think Indiana would be a better choice for me than George Washington? I know IUB has better programs and alot cheaper, but GW is in a good location for business.

I would love to hear your opinions. By the way, how does your son like the Kelley School of BUsiness? Does he think the classes are tough?? I really would like to hear what he thinks about the school.

PS- I am planning to major in finance and international business! :)

Indiana has the 9th best finance program in the nation. George Washington can’t compare.

Wow… Gogo I’m in such the same boat as u (schools and major wise)… minus the South Korea part…

gogobet-My son is a direct admit to Indiana with the IU distinction award and my daughter attended GW. They both have much to offer. You are right that GW’s location does provide a great opportunity for jobs and internships during the school year, as there are many businesses within a few minute’s walk of the GW campus. GW is also a well-known name in Korea. My D received a merit scholarhip there so it was not so expensive for us. I think both schools are wonderful but very different atmospheres. It depends on what you are looking for.

researchmaven - Thanks for the reply. You are the perfect person for me to ask questiosn. I’d really appreciate your help… Well… When you look at business school, IUB seems far more recognized by companies and other institutions. When you just look at business aspects… Would you send your child to IUB? I would even more appreciate if you could actually pick a school for me… I will definitely take it into consideration. THANKS!
