Why is it Better to Take SAT Math II instead of Math I Subject Test?

Hello - my son is in grade 9 in high school and is currently taking a course loosely called “Math 3” and is intended to be taken after Geometry but before Pre-calculus. He is mostly in class with students in grade 10/11. A lot of the students take the SAT Math I subject test after completing this course.

However I’ve heard from the school’s college counseling office that they do not recommend that 9th graders take a SAT Subject test. Instead they recommend that he wait to take the Math II test after next year.

Is there any downside for him to take the SAT math I test at the end of this year? And if his score is not so great, he can always take the Math II next year?? I don’t really understand why schools prefer Math II over Math I.

Any insight appreciated

Because Math II includes more material and many schools don’t want you to take both.
