Why is it hard for Asians to get into Yale??

fruits and vegetables

Do you understand what an over represented minority is?

Small sampling pool – Everyone gets hammered.

TOO MANY ASIANS Who have outrageous stats, grades, AP scores. All private schools have quotas whether it be for race, gender, income level etc. . If you have so many asians with 2300+ and perfect essays and recs, there are bound to be a ton of them deferred or rejected.

Doesnt sound fair to me.

It might not be… but that’s why you have to be more than the typical number-perfect asian

Part of it is the stereotype about Asians being one-dimensional math/science nerds. Another part is that Asians are generally very strong academically, and (to the mainstream eye) seem to do well enough as a group that they don’t need help (or need a handicap in order to give the “normal” students a chance). All this contributes to Asians being assigned a quota that, if it didn’t exist, would allow more Asians into top universities.

Another reason is that people in the US may not have their awareness raised on the issue yet where Asians are concerned, so to speak. You can imagine someone reasoning, “Our school has too many Asians for diversity” without much guilt, but if, for example, he or she were to say “Our school has too many black people for diversity”, it feels very different.

No, I’m not making much sense.

cuzz we be competing against each otherr dawggg wiff our 2400s

What people will write on an internet posting…

If said in real life, I’d walk out of the room sometimes.

^that’s nevada slang, T-2izzle sizzle

Asians as a group do well academically while blacks, hispanics, and native americans as a group do not. Thus, Asians (and whites) must be destroyed to save the other groups.

“Crush Kill Destroy”…name the TV show and you get a free pass into Yale.

“Asians as a group do well academically while blacks, hispanics, and native americans as a group do not. Thus, Asians (and whites) must be destroyed to save the other groups.”

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not, and I’m pretty sure you are, but I’ll respond as if you aren’t being sarcastic.

The people who are accepted into Ivy Leagues are the people who have shown that they are leaders, both inside and outside the classroom. Statistically (My older cousin used to be an adcom at a prestigious university in Chicago, so I’m not basing this off of inferences), many of the Asians who apply to Ivies and other highly-regarded universities have sky-high SAT scores and perfect GPAs but have not done much other than excel in schoolwork. They have not shown that they can be leaders or that they are anything out of the ordinary, and so most are rejected. A ridiculously large amount of Asian students apply to these universities, and so a very high number of Asians are rejected. The world is not out to get Asians, but they’re not being handed anything on a silver platter. They cannot only focus on schoolwork and nothing else.

Dash-

Ya I was being sarcastic…sorry bout it not being. However, I do remember a veteran poster on CC saying that some study or something said Asians as a whole do have superior ECs to other groups as well. I’m not asian btw (I’m a serb = D).

I think in the past, the Asian stereotype may have been true, but I believe it has largely changed today. Rarely on CC (which is skewed, I guess) do I see an Asian “only” good at testing/grades. Many actually do have a variety of leadership activities and are involved in EC’s, etc. Just saying.

Dash753: You are so WRONG and BIASED.

As is so frequently said in these circumstances, life is not fair.

High schoolers whine about this only because they’re worried they won’t be admitted (as is likely the case). As I’ve said before, those applicants are attracted to Yale because of how it carefully crafts its wonderfully diverse student body – which is, in many ways, what makes Yale Yale and not Caltech. One can’t have one’s cake and eat it too. If you want a diverse student body at Yale, accept the consequences.

which is why i now prefer caltech over yale

not.

“You are so WRONG and BIASED.”

I suppose that this is what happens when I base my opinion on what a retired adcom says. My mistake. I would like to defend myself by pointing out that, at least at my school, what I said rings true, although I suppose my school is not an accurate representation of the entire nation. Out of all of the Asians I know that applied to HYPS, only one was accepted, and lo and behold it was the only applicant who had any substance (other than high test scores). The other 8 (maybe 9) just didn’t. For most of them, their parents organized everything for them college-wise. But, then again, that’s only at the school I go to, I don’t know about Asian applicants from other schools.

Being an Indian, I can comment that most people here MEMORISE science. they Memorize theorems, mug up physics, dirac equations, newtons law, pythagorean theorems, Archimedes principle. They have never experimented in their entire life! Thats why they fail miserably while it comes to application. Thus they do very well in the SATs but at the end of the day it counts for nothing. (I can exclude Japan from this)
On the other hand, westerners DO science, they stress on concept rather than grades. You have to DO science. Science is something to DO not something to MEMORISE!!
Its not pretty hard to say that none from my country has got a Nobel pize in the recent past. But we produce 300000 engineers every year!!! hah!
