US News ranks Northeastern 56th in engineering. This is a peer assessment survey so it shouldn't be greatly influenced by the 5 year nature of the program.

So, beyond coop, is Northeastern strong in engineering?

So, beyond coop, is Northeastern strong in engineering?

yeah i have the same question im between northeastern BU and UCSB and I dont know which one to pick

I don’t know the answer but will tell you these NEU Engineering graduates are getting jobs-and good ones.

I will be interested to see what others who know more than I do have to say.

In my research trying to help my son decide on schools I was pretty pleasantly surprised by how many people have gone to NEU, have kids or other family members who have gone to and/or are attending NEU, and not once did I hear anything but good things about the school and the co-op. We live about an hour from there so I am sure much of it is regional but since my son wants to stay in New England it’s a good fit.

He may end up with engineering but for now is undeclared-so I will read this with interest.

I haven’t commented on this thread because in general, I think rankings are dumb.

Reputation is one thing, but no employer is going to look at a resume and think “hmm, well NEU isn’t ranked as high as X for engineering, so…” They care about your work experience and that you have references to vouch for you (I’ve heard that for engineering, GPA matters too). NEU has a good reputation among many engineering employers in boston. My engineering friends are doing just fine finding co-ops and jobs.

In my experience, it really is about the resume and not the school name. Get good grades, work really hard on co-op, establish good relationships with co-op employers, work on a strong resume throughout college, and you’re not going to have any problem finding jobs as a senior.

Great feedback Emily-thanks!

The USNews engineering rankings are based on surveys sent out to administrators at engineering schools in academia. Northeastern does not have the same academic reputation as some other schools. This is because of a) the relatively recent nature of the school’s improvement/growth and b) relatively lower research output.

Ratings are useful to a point. But once out of the tippy top schools, there are many things that can’t be captured in ratings. For example…co-op emphasis (which may cause a small ding on the research reputation category).

Co-op seems like a great thing for any type of job. But my own experience is with engineering. I had two summer internships with a major corporation (not quite as good a longer term co-op, but same idea). I’ve also worked with many engineering co-ops over the years. It really enriches an engineering education.

I’ve actually been disappointed with it. Maybe I’ve just had bad luck, but this semester I have 3 professors who are terrible. Like, I’m literally teaching myself 3 sophomore level classes right now.

However, I’m extremely excited for co-op. I begin my first this summer (starting early May for me) and have accepted a job at one of the largest energy/utility companies in MA working in their energy efficiency division

bumpbumpbump - Decision is due this week!

Any other opinions on the professors? The classes?
