Why is NYU worth 45k a year?

Its not Ivy League and probably some other stuff...why is nYU so special to you? Just wondering, this isnt a critiscm or anything, just the school is really expensive.

Not to be mean but we've already had this discussion before, search the threads...NYU is just as expensive as any other major private research university in the United States.

well regardless of the education quality, the location plays a HUGE part of the price. the property taxes in that part of new york are through the roof. the price of internet for thousands of students is another few thousand a month and the salaries of the great professors and other faculty members also contribute. in my opinion, 9k for a dorm in the heart of new york, food, utilities, and other expenses seems like a damn good deal. a studio apartment in the same area but a little larger costs around 375k if im not mistaken.

Are there any full-tuition scholarships or grants at NYU?

i dun get y ppl see NYU as expensive, when other comparable research/private university cost the same. what's wrong with this stereotype???

prolly because of the hilariously low aid packages they're known for;)

i guess, then, you are not for NYU!!!

oh, 10x for telling me where I belong, a$$hole
for all i know stern is usually worth the money, so is tisch. you'll be out with enormous, above average loans, but you have a good chance of getting a very well paid job in a great city. that's why i'm applying. besides, i want to see for myself how little they'll give me, you never know. but still your assertion that the high price of nyu is only a rumour is just ignorant. the pricetag may be the same as that of most top 20 schools, but NYU is stingy as hell. and aside from stern and tisch, the other schools are just not top20 level.
i dunno if it's the loction or they just have a crappy endowment, but they do suck at finaid and it's a well known fact, not a misconception;)

Tisch=good chance of getting a very well paid job but not CAS? Ha.

The price tag may be the same as that of most top 20 schools? How about the majority of the major private research universities in the United States of America.

NYU has a multi-BILLION dollar endowment.

D a m n....you need to do your research before you get on this board.

Tisch=good chance of getting a very well paid job but not CAS?

yup, that's what i've heard around this board, full of well prepared nyu experts;)
why else would cas, steinhardt or gallatin be so much easier to get into? actually it all depends on the person, but for all i know stern has incredible job placement. and everyone knows it's a more professional-orientred school than cas.
as for the size of their endowment-zillion, billion whatever, i don't care about the numbers. but there's gotta be some logical explanation as to why nyu is so need-stingy.

ugh you people are becoming quite annoying.

NYU does have HORRIBLE financial packages, and because of this, is viewed as overpriced. It is true top 20 universities have comparable tuition costs; however, NYU only covers on avrage, 67% of the financial aid need..and most of that is in loans. In other universities, they cover close too 100%, with a majority being in grants and scholarships. For example, in most ivies, families with an income of less than 45k, get free tuition. At NYU the most they could get would be 25k, and that is EXTREMELY rare.

NYU's endowment, while in the billions, is PATHETIC. Harvard for example has 1/5 - 1/10 the students as NYU (anybody want to look it up? I know nyu has ~20k ugrad ~ 50k students total) yet TEN TIMES the endowment of NYU. Most universities of NYU's prestige have 10 times the endowment of NYU. The reason for this is the enormous size, and the fact its prestige has risen too fast.

NYU has horrible financial aid, and there is really nothing they can do about it at this point....now everybody, please stop being idiotic and trying to deny this.

So if you realize it, then why do you go there and then proceed to complain about it?

well first of all its in NYC and everything is more expensive in NYC
and... the rest. uhh.

heat 24, was that directed to me?

Because I'm in Stern and they gave me a 20k scholarship and I'm majoring in finance. Stern itself is top 5 ugrad for business, and has the second best finance program in the country.

The most recent statistics I read for starting salaries were Stern highest, followed by Gallatin (for a particular year). Tisch is a fabulous school but acting is a notoriously low paying profession so I don't think you can measure success just by money -i.e. Broadway actors may not make a lot but they are doing exactly what they want to do.

catherine- where did u find these statistics?

NMustang99, although I too don't believe that NYU is worth the tuition, it does have its advantages such as:

Being in a fabulous part of NYC, which is one of the best cities to be a student in.

2.Some top notch, nationally ranked programs in:
a. Business
b. Math
c. Law
d. Medicine
e. Drama
f. Philosophy

And maybe some other majors that I am not familiar with.

Great contacts with employers especially if you graduate from Stern

HUGE number of majors and courses to choose from. Choice is NYU's middle name.

Truer words couldn't have been said. NYU's endowment per student is absolutely horrible compared to Ivies (if my memory serves me correctly, NYU has around 35k per student in endowment, where is Harvard/Princeton have well over 1 million per student.)

Don't remember where I got that statistic - it was either from an NYU or NYU related website or one their many mailings. In a question/answer format. But it is meaningless because it is for first year grads for one particular year (the most recent one they had stats for), and it doesn't take into account the fact that many students go to grad school so they have no "starting salary" after getting their undergraduate degrees. But except for Stern, I don't think you can say that going to any one school will necessarily give you a financial leg up. A science major at Gallatin taking many CAS courses will not necessarily have a lower starting salary than a science major in CAS. A communications major at Steinhardt may land a great job at an ad agency, for instance, and a playwright at Tisch might need time to get a career going.
