Why is Penn not presitgious?

For law school it is different, bc of course Penn law is presitigious. But for undergrad it does not matter where I go, but Penn may be less expensive than UT for me.

UHSdebater understands what I mean when I say it is not prestigious, bc it is not in some ppls minds. And to alot of Texans, the sun set and rises with UT. In fact alot of my clothes are UT clothes.

Why the hell does it matter if people know it or not?
Do you realize how freaking moronic you sound?
The brand name doesn't make you, you make yourself. Simply relying on a brand name to get you far in life will simply land you on welfare.
So stop bothering if people will care where you studied. It's what you made of that education that matters, for freaking sakes.

And by the way, I hope you realize that high prestige law school =/= more pay or education neccessarily. Heck, when I was interning at the Superior Court this summer, some district attorneys talked about how many Harvard law alumni sucked in court, and how others have to go solo because Harvard fails to teach them social skills and to nullify their pompousness in the workplace xD

Do people in Wharton typically say they go to Wharton when they're asked what school they go to
Usually they'll say both. It helps that there is no US State named Wharton, and no State school with a large sports program named Wharton.

I don't. I say Penn if it's a non-business crowd as in a social event. I say Wharton in a business circle. Often but not majority, the answer "Penn" elicits a response, "Wharton?", which will of course get an assent reply, but a lot of people are past the point where they need to get an ego boost by saying "Wharton" and risk that the person won't have a clue what Wharton is.

^^^The funny thing is, that where I am from (the suburbs of Houston) Wharton is a community college, and if I told ppl I went there they would think I go to a community college. It really depends on geography.

Who says that UPenn is not prestigious?? You would have to be really ignorant to say that.....and then again, if you are that ignorant, who cares about what you may think??!!!!

People calm down, this thread was not about bashing Penn, it was to inquire as to why (in certain regions of the country) Penn did not have the same "name" awareness as the other schools that it is comparable to.

Well, I can assure you that you'll get a magnificent education at Penn, and IMO thats what matters the most :)

Stanford is absolutely more prestigous than Penn an on par with HYP...wherever you are. You actually made a comment that Stanford lacks academic prestige....go out in the real world it has more than Penn.
I said Stanford and Duke have more lay prestige due to sports than academics. That is not false. Lay people aren't academics. Lay people will know HYP for academics, but will they really know Stanford (save those in Cali) on the academic level?

I just started freshman year at Penn and I really like it, but in all honesty, its not as prestigious as Stanford whether in academics or sports.

It doesn't really matter, Penn is great.

well i live near u penn about 20 minutes away and have seen it everytime i took my drexel dual enrollment classes. U Penn i guess is not attractive it has a very ugly campus adn it intertwines with drexel(an unknown skool).

^ The fringes of the Penn campus near Drexel are nothing like the beautiful, somewhat secluded areas in the heart of Penn's campus.

I love these threads; people fighting over whether Cornell is a legitimate Ivy League school or Penn a respectable college lolz.

I have seen HYP, Penn, Columbia and Tuft's campus...and Penn does not have a pretty campus. I thought Columbia was much nice with its beautiful quad and neoclassical architecture.

^ Many well-informed people would disagree with your assertion that "Penn does not have a pretty campus," but of course you're entitled to your opinion.

These are the most moronic threads ever what's Harvard or Yale or Princeton, seriously its an Ivy and a damn good school and anyone who says otherwise is a complete fool.

Penn's campus is beautiful. I think Columbia's is the most beautiful, but that's because I, like most people inclined towards authoritarianism, have a thing for neoclassical ;)

Penn's campus is indeed an unruly hodgepodge, which could lead to the underclasses getting ideas of unruly errantness. It wouldn't be Penn if it didn't ;)

Penn's campus probably has both the ugliest and the most beautiful buildings in the Ivy League. The Fine Arts library is a work of genius. And unlike the neo-gothic and neo-classical buildings of Yale and Columbia, it is a genuine piece of original architecture, not a fake imitation of Oxford and Cambridge (Yale even went to far as to throw acid on their fake-gothic buildings to make them look properly old.)

No one whould knock another school becuase of a perception of prestiege. What you learn and the ability to get into grad schools is really the issue. Penn, Duke, Stanford each have their strong suits and each put out strong grads. For a laugh I would add that I attended a competitive Law School, and had friends who made comments becuase they went to HYPS type schools. At my school most of the professors were top grads and went to Harvard, Yale, Oxford etc. Did that make the quality of my education any less? If so what does that really say about HYPS?

UPenn is extremely prestigious.

UPenn's campus is a hundred times better than Columbia... UPenn is gorgeous and its got a hell of a football field.
