Why is the math so hard for me?

Math has never been a great subject of mine, but i'v always managed to pull a B or C and still understand the curriculum. Its not that i'm lazy, i just have issues with it.
But the Math on the SAT is driving me crazy...besides for a couple easy problem, i have no idea how to solve most of them. When i'm stuck, I draw a picture and estimate. I'v consistantly scored about a 450 on the math section.
So, how do you guys do it? I really want to bump it at least 100 points, which may be mediocre for some of you, but fantastic for me
Thanks!!

I’m kind of in the same boat as you…I’m getting 550, and want to up mine by at least a hundred as well. So any advice would be appreciated by me as well!

Learn the tricks.

If you are only understanding how to do a couple questions/section, I suggest you get some sort of private tutor to help you, because you don’t understand some very basic concepts in math. I’m not saying this to be mean or anything, but you have to be realistic with your own level of understanding.

100 points should be relatively easy if you are able to work with a tutor for some time. Btw, by tutor, I don’t mean a $200/hr SAT tutor, but rather a friend or school-based program that can provide someone to give you some 1 on 1 time and correct your mistakes.

From what I have read, SAT math really emphasizes a deep understanding of how things work, and why it works. On top of knowing the concepts, you have to really be able to do things different ways using intuition.

One thing you can do to improve your SAT math score is take a whole bunch of practice tests and stuff. Hopefully it helps. The following two websites review all the key concepts covered on the general SAT:
[SAT: Improve SAT score with SparkNotes Test Prep: Assess skills online](http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/books/newsat/)
[SparkNotes: SAT Power Tactics](http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/newsat/powertactics/)

An alternative to the SAT math is the ACT. I never studied for it or anything, but I heard that it is less intuitive stuff.

Its not that I don’t understand math, i understand everything we do in class
its applying what i learn, to the (horrible in my opinion) word problems
I have a math tutor, I guess i should spend more time on SAT stuff with her
thanks for the tips!

The math material is all the same. Just taking plenty of practice tests and read how to solve for the right answer.

Thing is, SAT math is basically just applications of basic algebra and basic geometry… If you already have a math tutor, then yes, I would definitely spend some time with her on the SAT, it will help you a lot.

Is a 790 on the Math section a good score :(??? that’s what i got on the march test, and my parents beat me up when they saw that score…

lol your joking, right?

oh shut up for *#$#'s sake. You wouldn’t even be here if you didnt know 800 was the max score. Its people like you i just wanna punch in the face… seriously. Show off, fine. But don’t play stupid about it… geez.

korean, if ur parents beat you up for that score, they should beat you to a bruised pulp for being even more stupid and asking a question like that.

I desperately want to say what I think about this Korean but it will probably sound racist
(sure it will )
I can only tell you that even if you are the smartest guy on Earth ,you cant complain about getting a 790 on SAT Math in a thread ,in which other student explains how he cant pull a 450 …

I took an actual SAT as a practice (I don’t take it until next year) and I also found the math a bit challenging. Barron’s SAT book GREATLY helped me. I can’t stress it enough. I definitely recommend that book to you, you can go over it with your tutor and I think you’ll be fine on the math section. And for oneproudkorean a 790 is close to perfect score so yes that would be considered good by most people (I consider it great).
But a bit inappropriate to be posting that when someone actually has a math problem, while you don’t (an inferiority complex maybe).

Socalscott, part of your trouble with the math section may be that you are not reading the questions carefully because you are nervous. The SAT will often trick you; for example they will ask for 5x and you may solve for x. If you slow down a little bit and take time to note what the problem requires you to find, possibly by underlining what the question asks for, you will probably score higher. I know this sounds simple, but it may really help. Taking practice tests is a great way to improve timing. The college board book is the closest to the actual test. Also, maybe review some of the concepts tested using the college board book or another book. Good luck!

Hey,

I had trouble with it too. Some people get comparative advantages through tutoring, and I must admit I had some help when I was younger. I tried many tutoring companies and finally found some elite ones that helped me. One of them is e2x math, you can check them out if you like, E2X or you can simply just find someone who knows the subject forward and backward and get better at it. Also, you should not be too focused on it, that might be the problem, you’re thinking too hard, or if you have the attitude that its hard for you, it is going to be hard for you.

LMAO. No comment.

I would congratulate you Korean but after viewing your broken syntax and crappy diction I would expect you to get less than 600 in Critical Reading.

Congratulations on verbal mediocrity.
