why is the writing curve so harsh?

Ok, so on the reading section I got 65 right, 2 wrong, omitted zero=800.
On the writing, I got 45 right, 3 wrong, omitted zero=only 710. What a huge difference! I know the essay is part of it, and I got a measly 9, but isn't the essay only a small percentage? Do people tend to do better on the writing than the reading so there's a harsher curve?

I think the essay is a large chunk of the score - I got the same multiple choice score as someone I know (75/80), but she got a 10 on her essay while I got a 9. Needless to say, my score was a 740, while she got a 760 - a 20 point difference. Which is more than a bit ridiculous, if you ask me...

Its just 20 points geez.. The difference between 2 wrong and 3 wrong on the math is a 760 and 720!

But I do agree the writing MC was harsh. I got MC wrting 75 with two wrong and 760 wth 10 essay. The essay is supposed to be 1/3 of the total wrting grade.

YOU GUYS ARE ALL LUCKY!!!! I got 4 MC wrong on writing with raw score 70/80 and an 11 on the essay but still ended up with a measly 720.

20 Points is ridiculous? Are you listening to yourself?

You guys are harsh on your great scores- I'd be satisfied if I got a 700.

i gotta 10 on the essay (by filling up 2 pages of ridiculous non-sense all they care about is length)

42/49 M.C. which is a 700......... not that harsh guys...

it's harsh cuz ETS likes to touch itself....

Wow, gloaming, I also got 3 wrong, 0 omit, 9 essay, and a 710! THIs IS REALLY BS!

It's funny, because when I first heard about the new SAT I was happy there would be a writing section, since writing is my thing. I went to Governor's School in writing, I started a lit mag, I wrote for the newspaper, etc. Basically, I just love writing and I'm pretty good at it. I thought it would help me. But the opposite is true. I just cannot write an intelligent essay in 25 minutes. It's not enough time, and the topics don't help. When I read the question--"Is success based on hard work or luck?" Here's what went through my head: "Both, of course. But I can't say that because that would be interpreted as not taking a firm stand. I did that on the last SAT and got an 8. Well, luck probably contributes more. I could write about the Bush administration. No, what if the grader is conservative and gives me a bad score because of that? I better just write a boring old "hard work" essay." So I did, and got a crappy score. The essay section is pointless.
