Why is there so much Berkeley hate?

topic. Confusion at a maximum.

i agree lol ive seen a lot of cal hating on these threads and its hard to ignore when youre trying to make a final decision on the next four years of your life…its tied for first choice in my book and now im not really sure what to think. SO im thinking an overnight is the best option right now lol.

the more random the acceptances seem, the more hating there will be.

recent years, berkeley’s quality of education has been going down. It is concentrated n those few who are insanely smart and leading in t heir major. e.g. engineering, social sciences, med, and business. good luck if you want to attend here! I havebeen admitted spring 2010 but i am considering of not attending.

Probably because they did not get in?

i cant argue that but it is what you make of it. i think my hard work and everything shows that i deserve to go there. and its not like cal is the only college making people think “*** just happened”

I’m actually worried about Berkeley’s quality of education and peers in the next few years due to some of this year’s relatively random admissions and the budget cut in California…
Anyone wants to share their opinions?

i like berkeley

i’d say you’re half wrong about people hating on cal. People who are talking about improvements that could be made to Cal (while I’m guessing might seem a little harsh) are either alums or current students. It’s not until after you come here and realize what Cal really is like underneath all the hoopla that you may figure out what these complaints are about. (particularly for certain majors). That’s how I see it. Enjoy choosing :)

It’s not just people denied who are hating on the school. There was a long discussion on another thread where a current berkeley student just kept bringing up negatives (it was REALLY sad to read). They say competition is fierce, that classes are insanely difficult, that the town sucks, that many students are dissapointed with dorms+food, that the professors aren’t approachable, etc. Anyone want to dispel these negative opinions? Berkeley was my first choice until I read that thread, now I’m scared :/

crappyschool.com

^ how did this come about?

^^^ do you have a link to that post about berkeley? i’d be interested in reading it seeing as i could be going there next year.

hamburgler2 youre from claremont? i live in upland lol.

All of those domain things can be done by anyone with $7

and for current cal students: if you guys had a choice would you choose cal all over again or go somewhere else??

My friends were admitted with a 3.5 GPAs and a 2090. Cal’s admission however is not ALL random. Most of them live in Compton a well known “ghetto”, However, I do agree when people say that the quality of education is at stake when it comes to budget cuts and relatively few random acceptances. Professors are hard to reach, that is only if you don’t make the attempt to reach out to them. Most people are barred by the intensity of the course to approach their professors.

As for the atmosphere at Berkeley, its a hate it or love it thing. You either love the gloom (which I personally hated), or the cultural awareness. Plus the abundant amount of activism. I have heard of protests at the student centers!

Dorms are nothing to brag about. They are like all UC dorms. maybe a bit nicer then SD’s sixth college, i’ve heard.

Competition is what a few people live for. If its not you, I’d say choose a different campus for the next 4 years. However, there are a few courses with “not as much” competition, but thats rare (;

good luck!

Now you know how admissions officers have to go through to choose their applicants! you just deciding on 1 college, but they deal with 40,000+ applicants. Let them be random at times!

I bet a bunch of us are in the same situation.
We’ve heard all these good things about Berkeley, and we all think it’s a great school.
And that’s why we applied to it, got in, and are seriously considering going.

There are SO MANY problems with the school. Really.
But honestly, what school doesn’t have problems?
Cal students are some of the most vocal students on the planet.
Berkeley is like any normal school, but the students there see the wrongs and voice their opinion regarding them.

The following thread is filled with reasons why you should go:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/679953-why-should-i-choose-cal.html

My son is in his third year at Berkeley. He loves the town, loves the school, and does not think his fellow students are out to get him. There is a lot of socializing going on there, whether in co-ops, greek life, or other avenues. The town has a billion things to do and tons of places to eat. San Francisco is right next door. But Berkeley isn’t for everyone. You’ve got to want to go there because you like the school and the area. Maybe some of the less satisfied customers chose Berkeley due to rankings or didn’t visit long enough to realize what living in an urban college town would be like or they didn’t like it once on campus. Many people get there and realize it can be a lot harder than high school so they think it is super competitive. Maybe some majors are better than others. Who knows? Visiting is the best way to find out. Congratulations on getting in. Everyone I know who has gone there has been very happy with their decision. Berkeley may have a few budget woes coming up but it is the flagship university of California and is globally respected-they aren’t going to let the school go down the tubes.

Yeah people, honestly my friends (EECS) and I (math major) – i.e. no easy majors – really find this a great school, and love the location + environment.

The people who’re bitter probably ended up in a competitive major, had bad grades, or had trouble getting into classes. This depends on the individual + major. I’ve NEVER thought about signing up for classes early. I honestly signed up for and changed some of my courses one week into the start of semesters. There are some bitter ones with legitimate complaints, but a lot of us love the school.

By the way, a lot of people NOT on CC probably love the school, because they’re just normal, easygoing college students. Some of us may have come on CC just to rant :)

Yeah ranting. I don’t think normal college kids post multiple page posts on forums?
