why is this sentence wrong?

CBO3 #22.

Because the traffic was [unusually heavy], Jim arrived ten minutes late [for] his job interview even though he had [ran desperately] all the way [from] the bus stop.

the answer is C: [ran desperately]

I thought it was no error :/ WHY?!

it should be had run, not had ran.

can someone explain why had run is correct and had ran not? and for future problems, how do you know if its wrong? should we go memorize grammar rules, such as verb tense rules?

Because it said “jim ARRIVED”…thus we can’t use another past form here…thus “had run”…not “had ran”.

The auxiliary verb “had” indicates the past perfect tense. The past participle of “to run” is “run.”

CBO3 #22.

What does the CBO stand for?

Just a guess: maybe “College Board Official”?

The fact that “had” is in there (and is “correct”) means the verb after it must be past participle, run, swum, written, etc. If it had been arrived instead of run, then it would have been “had arrived.” Run is irregular.
That made no sense.

Or maybe “College Board Online.”

What doesn’t make sense?
