First the cookout, the noose, and now the KKK hood...

Discuss, why is it so racist?

I think the two followup events that occurred were done by sick people who get a kick out of the hysteria that occurs afterward, such as your post here.

What a BS title to a post. How about “why is there a very small group of people at UCSD who apparently enjoy getting under peoples skin by acting racist?” These are college kids acting like idiots. Nothing more.

At this point, I read that both the cookout and the noose were events orchestrated by minority students. From what I understand, the girl who left the noose in the library is a member of BSU. She left the noose in the library said that she didn’t intend anything bad from that. She just forgot a piece of rope that she and her friends were playing with. She claims she never meant any harm. That is ridiculous, because how many college students walk around carrying a piece of rope? What the other students are saying is that this girl saw an open opportunity to make the caucasian kids look like racists and thought she would take advantage of that, to sort of get even.

It seems to me the kids were acting on the past history that they heard from their parents about old racial issues and just made poor choices about how to demonstrate their anger at the caucasian race. Problem is, they got caught doing it and had to admit that none of it involved anyone who was caucasian, so it backfired on them. Most college age kids in that area have NEVER experienced one ounce of prejudice or racial discrimination. All ethnicities/races are accepted with open arms in San Diego and especially at that campus. It is not a racist campus at all. Just students with other issues who used very poor judgment in a prank.

agree, very BS title

It’s what always happens when the media gets involved… Mass Hysteria!!! Things get blown out of proportion and the few select immature kids who seek their “15 minutes of fame” continue to feed into it!! The same could be said about Davis… someone carved a swastika on the door of a jewish student!! These copy cat actions just help to feed into it all and as long as people keep it going it will fuel the fire!! Enough already!!!

I’ve never met a racist since I’ve been at UCSD. It really isn’t a climate of racism and hysteria, as the news seems to portray now.

Why is it that because theres probably a group of 5 idiots all doing this that suddenly the entire campus is racist?

I don’t attend the school, but knowing the area it’s located, and the general acceptance of all races I’ve seen personally in that area, I don’t believe it is racist. The media has blown the whole thing out of proportion, and it’s like a big snowball rolling down a hill getting bigger and bigger. I don’t beleive the intial party, though of questionable judgement, was intended to be racist, yet all the media headlines are screaming about the 3 acts of racism at UCSD. But the reaction of the BSU IMO has caused a whole bunch of tension, where before there was none. I can see where others, especially other minorities, would be resentful of all the demands they started coming up with to the school, which had absolutely no part of the intial party in question. I hope it settles back down, and no permanent damage was done. I’ve heard it’s a great school. It’s a shame to see it’s reputation ruined by all this.

why is california so racist? there are racist people there, so it must be true that all california is racist?

how about NY? they’re racist too, no?

one person does something small, but gets noticed and it seems big. its not a majority of people its 1/22000 students that left a noose and other things

It is a wonderful school! My son is a second year human bio major and he loves it! Funny enough it is not “Known” for its parties etc so it’s quite odd that this one particular party has garnered so much attention. Please don’t let the dumb actions of others influence your opinion of the school. My son is in Thurgood Marshall and one of the main areas of studies is race and understanding of equality etc. Never once has the issue of racism come into play before all this happened. I think people need to just let it die instead of feeding into the hysteria of it all. Look at Berkeley… There are always protests going on there about something or other… doesn’t diminish the academic reputation though, so why should this incidence mar your judgement on UCSD???

If just one person is Christian on campus and voices his/her beliefs in their faith, it doesnt mean that the entire campus is suddenly Christian. The same can be said about racism, if just one person on campus is, it doesnt mean the rest of us are. Some people out there are just trying to cause hysteria and pandemonium and sit back and watch it.

@Tornado: I’ve been hearing rumors (I say rumors because I dont have any sort of confirmation that its true) that the noose was hung by an African American girl who was pressured by the BSU in order to further the BSU’s cause to get all of their demands fulfilled. Do you know if its true?

The girl who hung the noose was confirmed to be a minority student. She claimed that her and her friends were just playing with a rope in the library

“I found a small piece of rope on the ground earlier in the day… My friend then took the rope and tied it into a noose,” the writer stated. “I innocently marveled at his ability to tie a noose, without thinking of any of its connotations or the current racial climate at UCSD.”

The writer stated that she ended up hanging it by her desk at the library, where she forgot it. She also said “the first thing I did was call the campus police and confess” after realizing the incident had been interpreted as “another racist act on campus.”

Lol a small piece of rope? that **** looks pretty damn big. its a load of bull **** btw there is a better article about the girl somewhere

This question is interesting. I say the answer is yes. Why? Everybody is racist, whether you believe it or not. It’s in our human nature to discriminate and distinguish just about everything in existence, including race. Just because you are more sensitive and politically correct to black students does not make you any less racist than anybody else. Anybody who has ever laughed at South Park, Russell Peters, Avenue Q, etc. is inherently racist. When a girl says she likes black guys more than Asian guys that’s being racist (but honest!- for more on that, Youtube “Yellow Fever”).

tornados if you think there’s any place that is 100% (not 99.9999%) free of racism then that’s amazing. Don’t be a fool and believe that those college kids never experienced an “ounce” of racism or discrimination. If you do believe that then you should open your eyes and realize that racism still exists today and in more forms than you may know of, everywhere, and although it’s not the same as it was in the past, that does not mean that people don’t have racist issues against others. I personally think SD’s awesome, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say SD or any place at all is simply free of racism. I fully acknowledge that that kind of racism is in the minority, but unfortunately racism is still existent. Even if something’s not violent or blatant like we’ve seen in historic videos and read in text books and whatnot, it can still very well be a form of racism and many people have experienced it, just open your eyes. Those aren’t the only kinds of racism that exist.

Again, this isn’t actually directed at UCSD, it’s aimed at the every place in general. tornado’s post just allowed the opportunity to address it, and unfortunately UCSD was the topic. But no, I do not believe UCSD is racist. Not contradicting what I just said, though. I feel that while some are racist, that does not necessarily define the area itself. Fortunately, SD is a good place, especially relatively speaking. But there are still those racist types out there…

tornados never said that UCSD was 100% (or 99.99999%) free of racism. To call someone a fool for saying something that wasn’t even said is, well, foolish. Am I practicing “foolism”, don’t mean to offend.

the title of this thread reflects ignorance and generalizes in itself …

as ajdavidson said,

"why is california so racist? there are racist people there, so it must be true that all california is racist?

how about NY? they’re racist too, no?

one person does something small, but gets noticed and it seems big. its not a majority of people"

just as we shouldn’t judge people by what they look like or where their family comes from… please don’t judge the entire school by the actions of a few.

Seems weird that UCSD would have so many incidents so close together in time. Other Universities don’t seem to be having a problem, even with 20,000+ students…

(MU did have that cottonball incident, but the two kids were arrested and are expected to be expelled)

umm… it’s because there are people here who are having a blast.

they did something stupid, everyone overreacts, they find it funny, they do something else, everyone overreacts again, they find it funny, they keep repeating over and over

i can guarantee you that these people are having a lot of fun with what they are doing right now. they are probably extremely amused by all the attention they are generating.

this could happen at any college

Like its being said in other threads too. There are people from other schools here right now for the protests. Who knows, they could be generating some of the things too, just capitalizing on whats happening right now. Who knows, some of them may be bitter from the accept/reject email mishap and are trying to get “revenge.”
