I don't get it! It says 4.0 avg GPA for the incoming freshman, but so many people from my school go there that usually get 80's if that in school. Explain this? Also, I come from a small division IV high school that doesn't usually have great athletes...my point being, those that went to UMiami with bad grades you would assume were great at sports but they weren't so I don't get it.

We have plenty of people who go to Miami who are idiots. My guidance counselor told me not to bother applying cuz i wont get in. I mightve, but i dont care. I hated it when I visited.

Yea...if it says 4.0 GPA then how do they let in the kids with like 3.0 GPA's? I really wonder

Maybe the 4.0 GPA data is bogus.

I have that Princeton Review book and it seems like you have to be the next Einstein to even stand a chance...but people worthy of community colleges get in there...go figure.

NYKer06, actually it says that the median GPA was 4.02. However, this was weighted GPA!

For unweighted, you could probably get in with 3.5 or 3.6 and around 1250 SAT (Math and CR). That is my guess. They do, however, give some nice scholarships if your record is significantly better than this.

OMG are you kidding? Weighted changes the whole ballgame...wow..thanks but are you 100% positive? I have a 3.3 GPA ish and currently a 1500 ish SAT total (I'm taking it again in October). Oh well you never know huh?

University of Miami is pretty tough to get into. At this current time you would need around a 3.5-3.6 gpa with a 1250 SAT (old scale). University of Miami is actually tougher to get into than many schools ranked around it or above it such as Penn State, Boston University, Syracuse, Pepperdine, University of Washington, Miami of Ohio etc....

Admissions are not easy and it is onl getting tougher by the year for UM. In another 5 years look for Miami to be a top 45 school

But can you give any theories as to how the people I know got in? It was just this past year and they had no more than a 3.0 GPA with some low SAT score and just average at spots and we are in a small school.

If U of Miami states that its median or mean GPA is 4.0 then it is definitely weighted; no question. No college has an average of 4.0uw to my knowledge.

By the way, 4.0 weighted means that 50% of the people have GPAs lower than that, and some significantly lower, so it's not too surprising.

NYKer, at any school. there are some kids that get in with lower than average or expected GPA or SATs. Some of the reasons for this could be:

They are underresprested minorities

They have family who graduated from there

They have a big booster who donated a lot of money there

The kids were athletes or had some talent that the university wanted

The kid was majoring in something that the university wanted such as girls majoring in engineering or guys majoring in English, or someone majoring in Egyptology etc.

They had strong ECs and maybe a very strong essay
These reasons just tough the surface.

Maybe it lets in applicants who don't need financial aid easier than ones who need it?

I must have been sleepy when I typed post 12. Just to correct my post and make it more readable, the following corrections should be made:

Item 1 should read: 1. They are underrepresented minorities.

The last line should read: These reasons just touch the surface.

I know that most of your don't care about this, but I am a stickler for at least trying for proper writing.

their high school was easy(grade inflation).

Sorry but UM is right across the street from my high school and its a joke the people who go there, trust me its not that hard to get into,UM is my schools second safety. I'm not trying to say that its not a selective college but don't believe anything you see UM recalculates gpa highly.

Yes, the gpa maybe slightly skewed. At the same time if you look at the U.S. News selectivity rating, University of Miami comes in as the 49th most selective school out of all the national universities.

UM's SAT range is quite high ranging from an 1160-1360 and 62% of incoming freshman are in the top 10% of their high school class

Considering U.S. News ranks about 120 colleges, Miami is in the top tier of most selective schools in the country. In fact it is more selective than schools such as Boston University, Syracuse University, Penn State University and University of Washington.

All of these other schools are quite good.

FSU-UF, do you go to one of the top 10 ranked schools in the country in Coral Gables?

I go to coral gables high school, is it a top 10 school?

I know we have one of the best IB programs in the US.
