Why is undeclared not the best idea for UCI

Freshmen applicant:
I heard someone said that you can put undeclared when you apply to UCLA, but you shouldn't do that with the UCI application.

It’s a major ***** to switch majors, especially stuff like Engineering or Biology (or especially business). You need some required GPA and specific classes that you need to take and other random ********. It’s too much work unless you’re like trying to switch into something small like Mathematics or w/e.

i think it’s better off to just apply to the major you’re interested in, since if it’s something you really want to do if you can’t get in as an incoming freshman, it probably will be harder as a change of major. also, if you really don’t have a major in mind, i’d suggest at least going undeclared under a school you’re interested in (e.g. social sciences, etc.)

Nothing wrong with applying as Undeclared. It will not hurt your chances if you apply as Undeclared.

will it hurt your chances of getting accepted to the school in the first place if you apply under an impacted major such as business admin or business econ?

Yea, business admin or management are very competitive majors but it’s best to apply while you’re an incoming freshman for those majors. One of my friends dropped out of admin after two quarters of his freshman year and he regrets it because it’s almost impossible to re-apply or apply in general after your freshman year.

Well when I applied as a freshman 2009, you are to put a primary and a secondary major. Put Business Admin as your primary, and w/e else as your secondary. Business econ is not impacted, so you can put that for secondary.

As for oxoboxo’s post, I have a similar story. I applied as admin (primary) and got in, then I dropped out of it before orientation, and regretted it ever since. I fulfilled the pre-reqs, and re-applied after my sophomore year and now I am accepted back into the program. And no, my GPA was not a 3.9+

I have heard that a lot of juniors got into bus. admin this yr as transfers, but that is purely speculation.

So no, it is not almost impossible or nearly impossible to get into biz admin after freshman year.

@junshik, i’m just wondering (not really for my information but out of curiosity and to help anyone who is interested), was your bus admin GPA though (the pre-req courses) close to a 3.9+ or around there?

@moey, not really close to a 3.9+. Lets just say 3.8 give-or-take .5. :]

Well, 3.8 GPA isn’t the easiest at UCI or most colleges for that and considering the average is only about a 3.0, not the best to take that risk. Changing into business, the applicants had an average of 3.8 so you were set, but people with a lower GPA get screwed in the process. I mean, there’s nothing wrong about starting with a major, but yeah, I was going to start with undeclared, too, thinking nothing was going to happen, but I changed at the last minute.
