I always thought chicago had tons of prestige abroad... i know some korean kids and their parents all wanted them to go there! maybe it changes from country to country...

I agree. I think different countries have different ideas about the prestige of US universities and i can't help but to agree to a certain degree that maybe there's really no need for some of my teachers to know so much about foreign universities unless they have heard of it before..=)

In my country, I think that even U Mich is more reputable than U Chicago...

Unich is a very well known school in Malaysia as well. It has always been ranked among the best. Just that lately it has dropped a bit but ranking really does not tell anything. Most of my teachers were surprised i did not choose Umich over Uchicago..lol

umich is dubbed kampung malaysia. and did you know there's a Kelab UMNO in purdue?

really? NO..certainly did not hear of that before. That's new..=) but interesting. Come to think of it, to go to place so far from malaysia just to end up in Kampung ( it's sort of a village im Malay ) Malaysia is quite a turn off. Hope i did not sound too unpatriotic. Does it matter?

I'm not that patriotic myself. One of the things I'm worried about is "showing ties to home country" during the visa interview.

It makes sense. Malaysians are a huge part of the int'l student body at Purdue. (Purdue visited my school in Nov/Dec.) I'm going to assume it's mostly the engineering/science school, though. :p

One thing, if you don't want to run into a lot of Malaysians, don't head to Dublin!! I saw so many Malaysians when I visited my sister there last last summer. Aiyoh...

Well...here's my 2cents.
Maybe, it has something to do with UChiago being more of a Grad school, than Under-grad school.

Arjun Shankar Prakash: True. Maybe..=)
IzzyJ: Dublin? Aite..Will keep that in mind..lol When did you move to Romania? Fun there?=)

HelplessGerman : Hallo, wie gehts? ( haha I just want to practice my german, which I'm pretty lousy at hehe)

Actually in my country ( costa rica) a lot of people have heard of U of chicago. My dad ( he went there for grad) used to have to explaining to people what it was and how it was a good school etc, but it seems that nowadays people have gotten to know it.

You mean Dublin, Ireland? Is your sister at Uni there?

megaman: Costa Rica? That's assuring..=) It is a good school. Just the 'name' isn't up there with the ivies for example. But i'm goin there. Coz name doesn't mean a thing. At least for me.
