Why isn't Tufts in the top universities board?

Isn't it considered to be a top university?

It’s fairly arbitrary, and frankly not of consequence. It may well have to do with the universities most talked about on CC. I really don’t know. But I do know that the Ivy League schools are not on “top universities” either; they have their own category. I also know that many high schools’ history of applications to various colleges and universities suggest that Tufts is harder to get into than some of the schools listed in either the top universities or top LAC categories, such as Vandy, CMU, WashU, Emory, UMich, Barnard, Bates, Colgate, Colby, Grinnell, Kenyon, Oberlin, and more.
It just doesn’t mean much.
One’s focus should be on which is the best school for him/her, because Williams and Swarthmore, Harvard and Yale, NU and Penn, or Tufts and Cornell, might all be comparable to the other in difficulty of admission, quality of the student body, and/or quality of the overall academic experience, but the atmospheres and experiences they offer are so totally different.

Who knows? The omission of Tufts made me wonder if one of the moderators, or moderator’s child, was rejected by Tufts and, thus, the exclusion. Because it makes zero sense given that it’s an objectively wonderful school, on a par (or better), than the included schools. But Tufts’ inclusion/exclusion shouldn’t be informing your interest in Tufts, frankly.

The moderators should answer this.

Let’s collect some of the facts and figures of Tufts and ask the moderators to put it there?

I don’t really know about general statistics, but I do know that in our public HS here in Massachusetts, acceptance to Tufts is great, but not extraordinarily difficult–we usually have double-digit acceptances. Maybe they just like our school? but our experience is that the other colleges on this list are noticeably harder to get into for the kids from our HS.

… because that is what it is -it’s a NESCAC school.

This is, however, against the school’s self-concept.

^ Tufts’ Carnegie classification is Research University and its academic offerings are consistent with that. The fact that they choose to play non-scholarship athletics with LACs in the NESCAC has only to do with the funding given to athletics - it has nothing to do with the larger university. Johns Hopkins plays Div. III athletics (except for lacrosse) in the Centennial Conference with Swarthmore and Haverford, but that doesn’t make Hopkins an LAC.

Eh. Despite my “official” status at Tufts (I don’t know why I put that in quotes, but I did), I can’t say that not being listed draws a reaction from me.

As regards the NESCAC comment - it’s nice to see BalletGirl resurface over the summer. I hope you’re still enjoying Dartmouth. We’re pretty proud of our athletic conference, too.

Not to knock NESCAC or the Ivy League athletic conferences, but [there are things that are far more important](http://www.tuftsdaily.com/holy-snitch-tufflepuffs-stun-quidditch-community-finish-second-at-world-cup-1.2405900).

Hahahahahaha. Well said.

we should petition to have this changed just because i’m lazy and it’s annoying to have to click through so many things to get to Tufts -_-

Maybe it’s because Tufts is such a hybrid? Even though it technically is classified as a university, or maybe it’s just that it’s “low” in the US news rankings. I love Tufts though and it was a hard choice between Tufts and WashU. I definitely did get a vibe that it was a very small school though, almost more like an LAC in size and curriculum to me.

Because the line needs to be drawn somewhere. If Tufts is considered a “top school” that would open the floodgates to a large number of more deserving schools…

Excellent point, ■■■■■.

Case closed.

The CC Top Universities Board is based on the USNWR Rankings from c. 2003. It hasn’t been changed in years, and I don’t expect it ever will.

i agree with wrathofachilles, and also I really think that the software is so old that it is hard and costly for CC to change that. This web site is not the most atractive or user friendly. It works for us, but it is not like easy or nice looking. They should make it more sexy with Tufts on the top list! :)
