It is quickly rising in ranking, already ahead of University of Michigan and UNC if you looking at USNews. Those schools have their spots, so why not USC?
Strong engineering program, good business school, etc. With the rival UCs facing big budget issues and considering how much money USC has, I can see them leapfrogging ahead and becoming a strong university that is well known on the international front.
If it's any school that gets added to the next "CC Top Universities" list, it should be USC. Am I wrong?

Is it that big of a deal that website doesnt think your school is a “Top University”? Get over it.

I was wondering that too, blbk. and MPD14, it would be nice to have it as a Top University because it’s much easier to get to its board that way. He’s not saying it’s a huge deal, he’s just saying that logically, USC should be there.

The idea that USC is superior to Michigan is absurd. That’s a copy-cat from USNews ranking. USNews ranking is fine, but sadly, it’s a ranking for undergrad desirability rather than academic standard and school caliber. Its criteria penalize large schools and State Universities thus it appeared on its last publication that it’s superior to Michigan. In reality, Michigan is superior to USC is almost every angle. Having said that, I would probably enroll in USC than Michigan primarily due to USC’s almost perfect weather and very nice campus set-up.

To command respect as a top university, I think it usually takes years of demonstrated strength in core liberal arts and science fields (such as English, History, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Bio and Chemistry). If it’s a national university, then scholarly production in the graduate departments counts for something. Michigan and Berkeley have this down. If USC has attracted top faculty who are cranking out good research in the humanities, natural and social sciences, as well as satisfying undergraduates, then it’s probably just a matter of time.

USC has earned a place in the CC Top Universities grouping. The USA college landscape has changed as better quality students and money are flowing to schools like USC and such colleges are in a better position to deliver a higher quality undergraduate academic experience. Defenders of the status quo are loathe to admit it, but USC has materially improved over the last decade while other schools, favored in the closed world of academia, have slipped.

Eh, I’ll take Michigan. I could barely breathe in the LA smog when I visited UCLA (granted, I have asthma).

As a huge USC fan (and a USC parent), I kind of like that it isn’t a “cc Top University.” It keeps the “stats”-obsessed-HYPSM-applying-based-on-“prestige”-only crowd away. If there are students who don’t apply to USC because it *isn’t *a “cc Top University,” that is perfectly fine with me!

Relax. You are getting way too worked up over this. CC’s group is clearly not meant to be some sort of definitive list, and it’s not modified and reranked every year the way USNWR is.

And tiers and rankings are all artificial anyway. So if you don’t like one, focus on another that puts your school where you think it should be. There are plenty of rankings out there. And if none are to your liking, make up your own ranking. I’m sure it wouldn’t be that hard to come up with some sort of methodology that has USC tops in the nation and UCLA dead last. And it would be just about as valid and just about as bogus as USNWR or CC’s list. If you rig the rules right, the rankings game is a competition that nearly any school can win.

I believe CC was founded by a UCLA alum. :)

Yes, USC is an altogether fine place. Lots of sunshine, mustard sauce barbeque, sweet peaches, palmetto trees and football. Go Gamecocks!!!

^
Agreed. Lest anyone accuse you of talking about the “wrong” USC, I’ll point out that it predates that west coast upstart by 80 years. ;)

While they share the same acronyms it’s generally accepted that University of South Carolina just calls itself South Carolina for short to avoid confusion.

unfortunately, IBclass06, older doesn’t always guarantee better (:

“why isn’t USC one of “CC Top Universities” yet?”

Because football is not part of the equation.

(go Bruins anyhow! )

Lol…USC is a rich kids school that is overanked tbh.

^Hmmm… and yet neither we nor our child are rich…

In fact, more than 60% of students at USC receive need-based financial aid. http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/

USC, as has been proven, jobbed their numbers for engineering at the grad school level where USNWR has them ranked as a top ten program. This occurred even though they don’t have one area of concentration at that level in the top ten. I would not be surprised if they very well did the same thing at the UG level. It seems USC is on a roll now. No consequences in football for cheating while Reggie Bush attended and no consequences from USNWR at the same time for sending falsified information. USC should be so proud.

Yeah I see why you would question this considering that University of Southern California is California’s second best university, behind first place Stanford. USC probably just isn’t that popular on this website as compared to those attending schools within the UC system.

^^^You have no idea what you’re talking about!
