Why Lawrence?

I'm interested in Lawrence, and I was curious to know what attracted other people to Lawrence. what was it about the college that made you want to go there?

Sorry no one responded prior to this, musicfencer. All I can tell you is that Lawrence is an amazing place. My daughter, now a sophomore at Carleton, was accepted at schools from Pomona to Vassar. When it came right down to it, Carelton and Lawrence were the last schools standing. She loved them both, but ultimately chose the former because she worried that she might not fit in as well at Lawrence because of their famous music conservatory. She's not a musician.

If you scroll back through the LU forum, you'll get lots of info on what folks love and dislike about LU -- there is more on the "love" side, I think.

There should be! It's a wonderful school. A very smart and talented friend of my daughter's is a happy sophomore there.

One thing that attracted my daughter to LU, was freshman studies. My daughter says that it met or exceeded her expectations. She is just had her last class for the two term gateway course that all students are required to take, and she was waxing about how much she liked that pair of classes. It was amazing the amount and diversity of stimulating intellectual material that she had over these two terms.

She ended up with chuang tzu, and she was even applying the lessons of that writer to her life.

Lawrence Freshman Studies

She really liked her profs so far, and she has done much writing and has honed this skill even with just two terms under her belt (almost - one week to go for finals). She said to me recently that she was happy with her choice.

She also went to bjorklunden in door county and had a special fun time like a retreat there, which overlooks Lake Michigan.

A new student center is scheduled to be online, I believe, next Fall.

and a couple more things:

she likes how close down town appleton is to the campus - it is almost right in it. she has seen some shows at the fox valley performing arts center.

She wanted a school with an academic emphasis along with music opportunities with people who cd read and play music, and she has been very satisfied so far. She is in orchestra and the quality is very good and she says she has grown as a musician. She is not in the conservatory, however. My impression is that the con and college line is very porous.

I think I saw some samples of Lawrence music on youtube taken from some audience member in the balcony.

eg, YouTube - Lawrence University LSO Kaleidoscope 2008 1812 excerpts

there is a link there of a parent's review of that kaleidescope concert w/ some comments apropos to the OP question

The show said much to me, and, at the end, there were tears in our eyes. I’m very glad I was able to see this one, and I see clearly why my daughter chose Lawrence University.
