Half the writing seminars that interest me are taught TR 9-10:30, but if I take Math 114 I'll have to either take the lecture at that time or the recitation at that time. ***? Why can't I have enough flexibility to have that time slot open when there are 3 sections of a class? Is it possible to sign up for the section that isn't listed on the freshman timetable or is that only open to upper classmen?

Most of the writing seminars are offered again in the spring semester; if there's one that interests you in particular, you can choose to take it in the spring instead.

course conflicts are, sadly, a constant burden, regardless of class year.

you could probably email the professor teaching the non-frosh timetable section to find out if you'll be allowed into the class.

I have another question, is it dumb to take all of my lectures (math 114, chem 101, econ 001, and writing seminar) MWF (writing and econ are only MW) with my lab and recitations TR?

not necessarily - shouldn't be too much to handle.

personally i've done 6+ hours of class on t/r a few times, in order to have easier m/w/f.

are tests/quizes usually given at recitations rather than the lectures? and why do all the 114 professors have fairly bad ratings on the course review?

math 114 gives recitation quizzes, sometimes weekly, sometimes not (depends on professor)

and midterms are often given at night.

say what?!?

the profs in the math intro courses generally suck. there are a few exceptions though (ward, etc.) and yes, it is not unheard of to have a midterm scheduled at night, especially if it is a common exam like in phys 150 or something.

if you've taken IB or AP calc in high school, how does calc 104 compare with regard to curriculum? are they similar, or is calc 1 a dozen times more difficult?

If you have a 7 in IB Math HL or 5 in AP Calc BC I would go straight into Math114.

How bad is the curve for Math 104?

.. And how do math curves work in general?

For Large Intro Math Courses: For midterms you compete with students in your section. When it comes to the common final, you compete with everyone taking the course. The final grade distributions are decided by how your section does against other sections on the final.

When are the tests/quizzes given for Math 115? During recitations or lectures?

And are Chem 101 exams also given during recitation? Are they ever given during lectures?

In general, midterm exams for large subjects are given in the evening at a common time. Chem101 midterms are usually like that (not given in lecture, but at a set time in the evening). Also, quizzes are usually given in the recitation (if the subject has one), otherwise during lecture.

I would schedule your writing seminar last. It's not a very important class.

question!
when & how do we find out what our schedules look like?

we find out schedules august 7...no idea at what time though.
