@homerdog Yep, it’s their loss. And yes, if you’re thinking “Starz TV Network” you are correct
PS. There are at least 40 Chicagoland students at Midd at any given year, so I guess that it will become increasingly familiar to the area, though few of this group are suburban.
Middlebury’s campus is beautiful & it is in a beautiful setting. One nice aspect of rural New England LACs is that on campus housing is usually available to students for all 4 years. Makes life easy. No 12 month leases.
P.S. Middlebury College with over 2,500 students has, in my opinion, an advantage over LACs with a smaller enrollment.
@Publisher no ED here. Gambling and doing all RD. I started this thread in case he gets into Midd and I want to know more about the differences between it and the other schools on his list. Of course, we don’t know what he will be comparing until March.
My wife was a February Freshman at Midd. She attended UVM for the fall semester and graduated with her class on time. I’m not sure if that’s still an option or not. She had a great experience. It’s a pretty campus and the town is cute and if you are outdoorsy and/or a skier it’s hard to beat. In terms of potential job opportunities for internships and upon graduation, it’ll depend on the individual and their major and their particular goals but it’s really splitting hairs.
Regarding job opportunities after graduation, U.S. News includes early career salary data. Middlebury places 6th out of the nine NESCAC LACs for which this information is available. However, the differences between most of schools are marginal.
@merc81 thanks. I just heard that the vast majority of kids who want to work after undergrad at Midd want investment banking or consulting and it’s super competitive because of the glut of Econ majors. Maybe it’s like that on most of the NESCAC campuses. I need to look at what the physics or math kids do after undergrad other than those two options. I know S19 won’t want I-banking, maybe consulting. Way too early to know.
I’ve just heard that it feels like everyone is an Econ major there and everyone is vying for the same jobs. I’ll look through the breakout of majors again to get some perspective on that.
@homerdog & @MWolf: The thread title asks “Why Middlebury College over the other NESCAC schools?”
Among several reasons, the one least mentioned is the proximity to Burlington, Vermont which is also the location of the 10,450 student University of Vermont. Only 34 miles, but the drive takes 53 minutes (less than one hour) according to an internet search of driving time between Burlington & Middlebury.
Burlington is a great college town & small city. And driving in Vermont is spectacular !
Burlington is on the shores of beautiful Lake Champlain.
P.S. I remain somewhat amazed at the difference between New Hampshire & Vermont. Even though I have driven through both many dozens of times over several decades, I am always overwhelmed by the natural beauty of Vermont. New Hampshire has natural beauty as well, but Vermont always felt like being in a different world–in a good way.
Not sure of the drive time, but Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire is worth visiting.
@Publisher Can’t two guys derail a thread by going off an a random tangent anymore?
Anyway, Dartmouth is about an hour and a half away, and there’s also a joint engineering program with Dartmouth, for those who don’t want to go to Middlebury because it does not have an engineering major.
Again, the Language program.
You get a cane replica when you graduate. Isn’t that reason enough?
If a student gets into Dartmouth and Midd then, sure, they can choose based on what fits them best but not many kids are getting into both of those schools!
@homerdog You don’t need to get into Dartmouth, you apply to program as a Middlebury student. While I understand that it is competitive, I don’t know how competitive, but I don’t think that we’re talking 8% of applicants. There is also a similar program with Columbia University which has a guaranteed acceptance if you have high enough GPA.
@MWolf yeah that’s what I thought it was. I’m guessing it’s either a 3-2 program or a 4+1 program. But @publisher said “for those who don’t want to go to Midd” so I was a little confused. I don’t think s19 would do a 3-2 but maybe a 4-1 if we agree to pay all of that money for a fifth year!
@homerdog: You have confused another poster’s post & incorrectly attributed it to me in your post #36 above.
@MWolf: Regarding your first line in post #33: I was not suggesting that anyone had derailed the thread, I was just restating the thread topic in an effort to give context to my comment that contained mention of two other schools to visit if one needed a break from Midd’s campus.
