Check out this new blog on Eric Lander teaching freshman bio: Eric Lander, spring rolls, and the New York Times | MIT Admissions

This definitely isn’t news - Lander has taught 7.012 for years.

In fact, many famous scientists have taught freshman GIRs ([Donald Sadoway](Donald Sadoway - Wikipedia) taught 3.091 and [Walter Lewin](Walter Lewin - Wikipedia) taught 8.01, off the top of my head). Many other professors teach the introductory classes in their relative departments. Even the new chancellor taught introductory CS while he was still a department head!

Most MIT professors enjoy teaching, even the famous ones :)

^ Right – my daughter had Wolfgang Ketterle as a TA for one of her physics classes – he won the Nobel Prize in physics in 2001.

You mean it might be possible for my math/physics son to tolerate a biology class?! :-)

And yes, I’m a parent who’d never heard of him…or anyone else at MIT. Ask me about famous dancers and choreographers and I can give you a long list. :-)

Perhaps the OP meant that MIT rocks because her son is a blogger :-). MIT does rock indeed, for many reasons, and awesome teachers is just one of many :-)
