Why Muhlenberg?

Thank you MarathonMan for the information. There are so many variables they look at and we can’t rule out the MCAT scores.

D was admitted to Muhlemberg, received a very nice scholarship, and is impressed by the musical theater program and all the positive comments, but she is wrestling with the location. Even if a college offers a lot of on-site activities and events, it’s still nice to have somewhere interesting to go off campus, especially when the campus is fairly small. We found Allentown to be pretty uninspiring from a college student’s point of view. And it didn’t seem as if anything at all was within walking distance.

MommaJ, I had/have that problem as well. I’m used to being able to walk two minutes from my house to get to a really nice downtown area, or taking a train 20 minutes into Boston. So I feel really fenced in here sometimes. But, there is the farmer’s market within walking distance (I love that place) as well as a nice park, and the shuttle service takes students to places like Target, local restaurants, the mall, etc. But if she’s in theatre, she’s going to be too busy to leave campus most weekends. The rehearsal schedules are pretty intense. And then if she is in an a cappella group or a choir that adds concerts or rehearsals on the weekends (gospel choir has weekend gigs but I’m not in college choir so I’m not sure about that one)… yes, I am mind-numbingly bored some weekends, but fortunately I have a really close group of friends to be bored with!

Wow, I’ve never heard my daughter say that, unless she’s here at home. And now with the incredibly busy schedule she has at school (always something needing to be done on weekends), when she’s home for break, and is bored, she likes it!

btw, ChellyBelly42, I often wonder if I’ve given out too much information about my daughter at Muhlenberg. Have you been able to figure out who she is? Not that that’s what I intended, but I was just wondering, as a parent, how naive I’ve been in the information I’ve given out. I think you’re the only MT student who posts on CC.

my daughter was also accepted and is wrestling with the location and size of the school. She plans to be involved in both choral groups and dance groups. I am glad you are saying that she will be busy on weekends with rehearsals. She is torn between Muhlenberg and Elon right now and is afraid that Mulenberg will get boring on weekends. She will be happy to hear that her weekends will be busy with practices.

dql333 we - we visited Elon also, and honestly, it felt very rural to us (yes, there is stuff within walking distance), but I don’t know what you’d do if you wanted to do something beyond the small town. At Muhlenberg, it’s easy to catch a bus into NYC, about an hour and a half away, and there’s absolutely no excuse for being bored in NYC. I also know that each of the theatre classes go into NYC usually once a semester. D2 has a car on campus now, but the only thing she really uses it for is to do some grocery shopping; she just doesn’t have much time to do much else.

^^^

Philadelphia is even closer than NYC.

yes, it is, but if you’re a performing arts major, you’ll have a lot more options in NYC.

re: the “mind-numbingly bored” comment… I like to have a lot of things to do (: so at the beginning of the semester, or parts of last semester, I had no rehearsal, no work, no homework, nothing at all that I had to do… and then one weekend to top that off, most of my friends decided to go home. Super lame.

teriwtt, I actually haven’t figured out who your D is… I’ve figured out some other posters’ kids’ identities, but isn’t your D older? It’s possible I know her but I’d doubt it… I don’t know too many people outside of my class.

I love the proximity to NYC and Philly. I went to a concert in Philly in October and I’ve been to NYC a couple times. The school organizes trips randomly, where you can pay something like $10 for the bus. Actually this Saturday there’s a trip to see In The Heights, which I unfortunately can’t attend because of A Cappella Fest.

ChellyBelly: my D is a sophomore and is in an a cappella group, so you probably know who she is, just not that she’s my kid - that’s encouraging. If you can’t figure it out, then probably no stalkers can!

Enjoy Into The Heights; I’ve heard it’s fabulous!

teriwtt-My daughter will be happy to hear that they go into nyc. Her big fear is that the school is smaller than elon and because of that, there will be fewer things socially to do. She did an overnight at Elon and found everyone so nice. The social scene however, revolves around frats and sororeities, which concerns me. You are right, there is no big city to visit if boredom sets in. It’s pretty much stay on campus. I am anxious for her to do her overnight at Muhlenberg. I think she will enjoy it.

For those accepted students planning on attending the Through the Red Doors - Accepted Students Day on Saturday, April 18th, if you are interested in theatre and would like to see a student directed play, my D is directing a one-act play which will be performed that day at 5 pm in the Red Door Cafe, which is downstairs in the Seegers Student Union. It starts at 5:00 and will last less than an hour, and admission is free :)

To the original question: D looked excusively at tiny LACs. 'Berg made her list primarily because of their dance department, and specifically because it seems to be the only college on earth that has a strong tap program.

actually LasMa - I’ve heard that, too, that it has more levels of tap than almost any other dance program.

Hi . My son is possibly interested in Pre Dentistry. He is a junior in a Midwest Public school and in the IB program, one of only in our state. He is pretty smart, but not a genious. He doesnt drink and plays hockey. We are coming out to the area for National Hockey tournament in April. We want to look at a few schools in the area. U Penn and Bucknell, including Villanova, and Lafeyette are on the list.

I saw in the college ******* list that Muhlenberg kids dont party that much, compared to other schools. I of course, think this would be good. I also know that they rate well in pre health, but my son really doesnt know if Dentistry is for sure what he wants to do. He may want to get involved in Bio Chemistry or Neuro science.

What is the party scene really like at these schools. If it were my choice we would find an LAC that is more community oriented without a greek system to curtail some of that exclusivity of a greek system, and to curtail excessive partying.

Thanks

How is the business program? And, there is always a mention of the Lutheran roots. How religious is the student body? I know that every school has diversity but is it mostly conservative christian? My son would be coming from a Jesuit High School.

My sense is that Muhlenberg is, if not mostly Jewish, then very vibrantly so.

^Not sure that mostly Jewish, would be accurate, but a strong, active presence.

Regarding dffmom’s question about Lutheran roots, that is not reflected in the present day population.
I would not say the vibe is NOT “conservative Christian”, and would describe the campus body as more liberal and tolerant.
Because Muhlenberg is a small school, your son may not find another school a better fit.

Shoresea, once you visit the campuses you will find them very different, with UPenn urban and very competitive.
Bucknell and Lafayette are more similar, my husband and I graduated from Bucknell many years ago, and our son was accepted, but decided to attend Notre Dame, instead.
The drinking / frat atmosphere at Bucknell was a big concern, and I was not unhappy about his decision.

I haven’t been to Villanova, but many of the local grads from our area attend, and it’s large enough and close enough to Philly to offer more diversions.
Bucknell, Lafayette, and Muhlenberg are more remote.

Does Muhlenberg have a hockey team? The campus is very small, and confined. The facitilies compared to other schools, like Gettysburg, Ursinus, and Dickinson (except for that library) are much nicer.

Muhlenberg student body is less Greek oriented, less conservative and preppy.
The jocks may party (drink) more than the non-jocks, so he would have to carve his own way, if his teammates are drinkers, but I think he would find the atmosphere less restrictive than other schools with 50% Greek participation.
