Why no CVW?

I don't mean to complain, as it would sound selfish seeing all the sadder threads this time of year, but I have a predicament. I have an LOA (dated Jan. 11) and a nom. but I have not received anything regarding a CVW. I would love to attend one. Should I call my BGO? My area coordinator?

Thanks,
Joe

With a tactful, careful approach, why not? Others have called their admissions officer and gotten it reconciled. It means little that you've not gotten an invite. It could be your geographic area, timing, etc. Don't try and read anything into it. I'd ask. The worst that can come from it is a "no."

You're so right. There are many greater, more discouraging things that could happen to a nominated LOA. Congrats. Quite soon, the CVW will be a vacant memory to anyone aside from your mother or old man, and sitting in Bancroft, you'll be wondering what the worry was about ... or maybe even, "I musta been nuts!" Pleasantly so, perhaps.

Thanks WP, I'll call my BGO tomorrow and ask about it.

I'm not worrying about it too much, it's just that I really want to go to one to get the real experience. NASS was good but I want the real deal.

Same thing happened to me last year. I had an LOA and 2 noms and I didn't get a CVW invite. I just called admissions and asked for one, it wasn't any big deal and there was no huge protocol involved. I didn't actually go because 2 days later I got my appointment. Funny how things work out.

Last year was 3q'd with nom, called admissions and asked about a CVW late in the Spring. They said sure - went out for a weekend. Didn't get the big packet so applied again this year. Seems like CVW is more of a recruiting tool for USNA than a screening mechanism.

^^^

I don't CVW is intended to be either, it's simply an opportunity for potential candidates to visit the academy and spend more time there than you would during the course of a "normal" college visit. If you've already been through a summer session I doubt CVW would provide much more "enlightenment" than you may have already been exposed to.

For those applicants that did not get a slot at NASS or perhaps decided to apply during their Senior year it's just a chance to see the academy in more depth and detail. It's not going to prepare you for Plebe summer, but you might come away with a better idea if the Academy is a good fit.

Ultimately I believe CVW it's just another part of theirs effort to reduce the number of kids that leave during Plebe summer by giving applicants as much information up front as possible. It's not in anyones interest to recruit kids that don't stick with it and make it through the 4 years.

My son asked for a CVW...he had been talking to the coach (but he's not "blue chip") and the BGO. I think the coach set it up. Would have preferred an NCAA visit but that didn't happen...so this is fine. Son thought it pretty crazy to consider attending someplace without a visit, so if the CVW didn't happen, we would've made a family event out of the visit instead. He goes in Feb.
