Information Systems is a great major that combines both technology and business. Why, then, is it so unpopular?

I really don't know but I agree with you. I applied for it also.

I don't know if it's unpopular. Maybe people just don't know about it and it's overshadowed by CS.

I went to 2005 IS graduation---a bio, about a minute long, for each grad was read. Most had impressive jobs, many in NYC at top banks/financial institutions. The job market is strong for this field and CMU's program is ranked #2 nationally behind MIT.

Why would you say its unpopular? It showed the greatest increase I think along with Tep. If anything I think it is too popular considering how small it is.

Yea, this is my major because im not a "pure" comp sci person or a pure humanities person. I hope I do well for I heard all majors at CMU are extremely difficult.

Don't worry. You'll do fine. IS is a lot less work than CS and you'll be highly marketable when you graduate.

Yea I got accepted ED for IS when I tried for CS (don't ask), and I dont have a clue what IS is about. I've heard IS is technical support people you talk with on the phone (not the best of jobs...), but I am not too sure whats CMU's interpretation of IS is...

IS: an example--- if you work for a big financial firm (many CMU IS people do) your group maintains the technology behind the transactions from trader to salesman and back. Millions of dollars will go through your department and there are lots of ways these transactions can be improved upon, and there's trouble-shooting when things go wrong. You work in real time with up to the minute problems. Fast paced and interesting. And you become a manager and make the big bucks :). Lots of group projects and real life simulation while you're in school.

That telephone tech support stuff is what's being outsourced to India. You'll be the high end trained person whose job (hopefully!) won't be outsourced.

Salaries are good and you can get nice bonuses.

wow I already do IS then if that's what it is. lol
