I am from KANSAS.. I got admitted GIT,UMICH, UIUC, and UCLA for electrical engineering.. I was going to go to UIUC, but now im confused. I told every my frined i go to UIUC.. But then they ask me, " Why do u go to that school?? I have never heard UIUC is good school.. Why don't u go to michigan or UCLA?" Everybody knows UCLA and UMich are really good schools.. but Why knowbody knows UIUC as a good school?? UIUC is that s.h.i.t.ty school?? My choice is wrong?? How do u guys think??

Anybody who doesn't know that UIUC is one of the top schools in the country for EE doesn't know much about colleges. You need to listen to different peolple.

How I think is UIUC is not a difficult school to get into and has a gigantic student body with probably not much in the way of advising, relative to some of those other schools you listed. UIUC is more than just an engineering school and the "more than just engineering school" is average. I would go to mich or UCLA if I were you but that is mainly because I want more than just a great engineering school. Grad school is a different story, however, and for that I would consider UIUC. But Mich and UCLA, imo, provide better well-rounded academics if you want more than just engineering. Again, this is just my opinion and is definitely not gospel.

Keep in mind, UIUC has like 40,000 sudents and they need a high acceptance rate to get that yield. You don't have to be great to get in (although the engineering will have a good amount of bright kids).

melani, They are all about the same in terms of quality. I like to know, that do your friend in Kansas know about GT?

I'm with oldolddad. UIUC is a great school, especially for engineering. The people who matter (future employers and/or grad schools) know this--their opinions matter more than your Kansas friends.

yes, of course, they know GT as well.. Almost everybody says GT is really good engineering school.. I think the name of GT finishes with TECH.. That looks more prestigious.. All schools finish with Tech make their reputations good like MIT,VT and things like that...

Illinois also is very good in business and other areas. As far as difficult to get into one need to just look at the stats of the engineering classs. Pretty impressive. Like any big state school it has a lot of things going on and a lot to do. Also they fix your tuition for all four years. That is a plus and it is cheaper for out of state than UM or UCLA. Also it is difficult to get your engineering degree in 4 years at UCLA. I have former students there who say say advisors tell them to take five years(expensive for oss). All the schools on the list are good but different. Look carefully at the things that are important to you. Then make your decision

I'm from Kansas and a good friend's daughter is there now as a sophmore. She says the engineering kids love it, they hang out together and she's heard great things. She had a tough time getting used to it though, because the instate ratio is 92-8 and most of the kids were from Chicago. My kids friends from camp are there and love it too- I think they are in engineering as well

fourkidsmom: Good point on the ratio. One thing different about UM is that they have 36+% oss. Places like UCB (6%), UT (8%) and many other top state schools are much lower like UIUC. That may or may not matter to many kids.

Kinda off topic, but the only reason UT's oos is so low is b/c of the instate top 10% rule.

But anyways, you can't go wrong with any of those schools. Personally, I think places like UMich and UCLA have a better all-around college experience and that's why I'd pick them over UIUC. You should visit each and see what best fits your lifestyle.

The only difference between in-state and out of state for a public university is that the in-state kids go home a lot more often. If you can beat the lower OOS admit rate to get in, then that shouldn't be a reason to stay away.

For the girls, the know each other before can be cliquey. I don't think that pertains to the boys as much.
She doesn't talk about the kids going home, just the clique-y stuff.

melani: Don't second guess your choice based on what others think or say. Really, trust me on that. My son attended a school none of his friends had heard of - and he stressed about that for quite awhile. But he loves it, and he's getting a fine education, it's lovely, and some of those same friends are already transferring! oldolddad has it right - UIUC is a great school that lots of kids LOVE and do well at.

I'm in Canada and even I know UIUC is good.

Am I the only one that believes that this was a joke thread to begin with. I mean someone who says he(she) only "thinks" GT has "Tech" in its name, that having "Tech ... looks prestigious," anything with "tech" in it has a good reputation, and that "no one" knows about UIUC but all are familiar with Mich. And the clincher is that the poster has been admitted to UCLA even though its decisions are not out yet.

Joke or not, UIUC is a great school.

As a UIUC student, this topic isn't very pleasant.

It's not a big mystery that UIUC doesn't have the name recognition of UCLA/UM/GT. Sports.

UIUC probably doesn't have the same name recognition as UCLA or UM, but GT? No frigging way man!

I can only speak from experience. Growing up in California, I never once heard of UIUC...I had heard of GT. And hell, I got into UCLA.
