Why not 36?

Hey college confidential.

On my score report, I received this:
English 35
Usage/Mechanics 18
Rhetorical Skills 18

Something looks wrong here. Is there any reason why I should be receiving a 35 instead of a 36 in English? If essays were factored in, I would understand (even though I have not yet received an essay score), but since they aren't, I am very confused.

Did this happen to anyone else or is just my score report weird?

I have heard of this happening to other people… You are not the only one so, I am guessing it is normal.

sometimes the scale is still 18 but you could have missed one, thus leaving it to the curve and giving you a 35.

but, nevertheless, it could have been a mistake … i suggest contacting ACT and inquiring about the matter.

You can still contact ACT, but they are likely to tell you the same exact thing.

Yeah, what everyone said above is right. For the PLAN test I took a while back, I got full points (16, I think) for both math subscores but I only got a 31 for the subject. Your score is determined by that scale which counts how many questions you got wrong on all types of problems.

Same happened to me. usage/mechanics 18 and rhetorical skills 18 and my total English score was 35

damn. No 36 composite for me then. D:

That’s so weird. Smh

Sometimes subscores have generous curves too.

It could be an 18 if you got 39-40 usage mechanics and 18 for 35 rhetorical
if you get what im trying to say.

How could you get so close to a 36 and not have know this :O

^He got a 35 in English, but a 21 in Test Scoring Skills

^^
i don’t know how the test are scored, i just know how to get the right answers [well, most of them): ]

Just cos y’all may find this interesting, I got the exact same thing as the OP for English (English 35, Usage/Mechanics 18, Rhetorical Skills 18) and 36s on all of the other three sections (18s on all the subsections) and got a 36 composite. So, that one English weirdness alone was not what disqualified you from a 36 composite.
