I'm looking at either the University of Chicago or St. John's College in Annapolis. Both seem like incredible schools and while they're very different I feel like either could be a very good fit for me. (Except tuition... that's the main problem for me right now.)

Anyway, for those of you who have gone to either one of these schools or know someone who went there or know something I don't, would you discourage people from going here, and under what circumstances?

u of chicago is in a bad area.

Oh dear. If [Hyde Park](Hyde Park, Chicago - Wikipedia) counts as a bad area, you’re living a sheltered life indeed. :)

Turning to the OP, whether either (or both) of these is a good idea depends in good part on what your goals are. These are both excellent schools in their own fashion, but they aren’t for everyone. What are you looking for in an education? What do you hope that it will prepare you for?

(Depending on the answers, you might find [Shimer College in Chicago](http://shimer.edu) worth looking into; it shares much of the St. John’s curriculum but offers a quite different experience.)
