<p>pamplemousse, hahaha - love the username. one of my favorite french words! second, except for the ones my parents forced me into, i have passion for all teh top i applied to - i applied to a lot because I know that scores don't guarantee an in, so i hoped at least one would feel that i'm as good a fit for them as i believe i am.</p>

<p>and ooh. my dad tried to force me to apply to less reaches, but i had the stars in my eyes, and was convinced i'd be just like rory gilmore (i was hooked on that show frosh year, and was so shocked when my college app experience didn't go the same way; sad, perhaps, but that's the only example i had)</p>
<p>and your logic is actually quite good. i was expecting a 'they all just looked so good' kind of answer, typical from multiple school applicants</p>
<p>i say apply schools you can picture yourself going to. 10-20 is ok, if your school allows it, if you have the time, and if you're not doing something ridiculous (like 15 safety schools or 15 impossible schools, like applying to HYPS with a 1300/2400 SAT with no hook or connections, etc.)</p>
