Why not....

Okay, if colleges have Tuesday-Thursday classes for and hour and fifteen minutes, then why not have monday-wednesday classes like that and have Fridays off??

In my experience from many moons ago the reason given was ...

The classes given in three 50 minute blocks (MWF) were set up that way because it was believed the students had a better chance to absorb the information and to work through examples and homework if the information was delivered in three smaller bites ... these tended to be classes like math classes or engineering courses that were very homework set intensive.

The classes given in two 75 minute blocks tended to be courses like history or economics where allowing an thought/discussion to be played out longer was considered the better approach.

And the classes fell on different days because it worked out much easier to schedule classes that was (the 75 minute classes did not typoically end half way through a 50 minute class).

25 years later, I still remember my three-hour statistics class on Monday nights (in grad school). That gave me a whole week to absorb and (try to) apply the information!

Many colleges do offer MW extended classes...

The community college classes I am doing through this year do a Monday through Thursday schedule, with most classes being about an hour and a half long. The schedule works perfectly, and I love it, because it gives me a chance to work longer hours on Friday, do homework, and catch up on my other classes.

my school has MW classes like that.. actually a lot of schools do the m/w or t/h courses and have fridays off. it just depends on where you apply. I had fridays off last semester, and fridays off this next semester as well.

Lots of sections are held on Fridays. Language classes meet everyday. And quite a few regular classes are held three days a week so that more materials can be covered at a less frantic pace.

Back in the dark ages at Georgia Tech, my freshman year we had Mon-Wed-Fri classes and Tues-Thurs-Sat classes. But the Saturday classes ended at noon, so we could have one-an-a-half-day weekends. I also had evening labs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I swear that they were trying to cram a five-year program (engineering) into four years.

some classes at my school are offered MW

Fridays aren't weekends anywhere else, why should they be in college? By the same token you could ask why aren't all classes 3 hours one day a week? Then you could have class for 15 hours on wednesday, and nothing at all any other day!

my school offers some classes MW...both semesters Is've been here I've actually had fridays off...it's amazing.

oh yeah one of my friends is crazy taking only TR classes doing 9 hours each of the two days. So no classes for him on S, M, W, F, S!!!!
